No Magic remedy: Sore Kidd scratched

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 31 Januari 2013 | 17.08

Coach Mike Woodson's fears of running Jason Kidd into the ground were well-founded. The venerable guard was scratched before the Knicks' 113-97 victory over the Magic Wednesday night because of a sore lower back, three days after being limited to just five minutes against Atlanta.

"When you lose Raymond [Felton], you're forced to play Pablo [Prigioni] and Kidd — and mainly Kidd — a lot of minutes," Woodson said. "We wanted to save those minutes for Kidd as we made the final run, but it just didn't work out that way.

"Kidd has been a trouper about it, in terms of giving us what he's got.''

Kidd apparently gave too much — or more to the point, perhaps the Knicks asked too much of the 39-year-old who already had missed four games earlier in the season with a balky back. Woodson was hopeful that with some rest, Kidd would be back to face the Bucks Friday.

"He's sore. We're going to rest him and see how he feels [Thursday], and he'll probably play Friday,'' Woodson said. "No [tests]. He's just sore. He's logged a lot of minutes since Raymond had gone down. Now, Raymond's back. We can be a little more cautious I think. If he says he's a little sore, then I've got to be open-minded to that, rest him and welcome him back when he's ready to come back.''

Felton's broken pinky forced the Knicks into playing Kidd 30.4 minutes per game going into last weekend, far more than they had intended. But he logged just 15 minutes Saturday in Philadelphia, and just five Sunday against the Hawks, sitting out the entire second half and telling Woodson he needed a break.

"The ideal as to play him between 20 and 25 minutes per game, then there'd be some nights where he's the guy, you play him down the stretch and he might sneak up to 30,'' Woodson said. "But we went through a stretch, that while time when Raymond was out, [Kidd] was averaging 30 minutes a ballgame. That's a bit much.

"There are nights Raymond might be sitting because he's struggling and you need Jason down the stretch. Early in the season he had some games like that. ... I just don't want to go through another stretch where we have to depend on him for 14, 15 games playing 30 minutes a night.''

Nevertheless, Woodson said he will not feel hamstrung in playing Kidd on the second game of back-to-backs.

"No, not really,'' said Woodson. "If I can hold his minutes to about 20 to 25, he shouldn't have any problems playing back to back. Jason is in pretty good shape so that shouldn't be an issue. I just don't want to get back to where he's playing 30-plus a game. That doesn't help us at all, as we continue on this journey.''

Notes and quotes from Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans

KAP'S TAT SHOP GETS INK

Tatted-up 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a running, throwing — and free — advertisement for the artist who gave him the ink. "Business has really, really picked up, doubled," Nes Andrion, 35, owner of Endless Ink in Reno, Nev., told Bloomberg News. A sports advertising evaluation firm estimated Kaepernick (who attended college at Nevada) and the tattoos will get approximately two minutes of up-close screen time, worth about $16 million.

FAULK'S STILL A SPY GUY

Former Rams running back Marshall Faulk said the Patriots and Bill Belichick's video crew "cheated" their way to a Super Bowl XXXVI win in New Orleans and commissioner Roger Goodell has been shady about the destroyed "Spygate" tapes, but sure, 11 years later, he's over it.

AP

Jack and Jackie Harbaugh

"Yeah, I'm over the loss. But I'll never be over being cheated out of the Super Bowl," Faulk said, according to Comcast SportsNet New England. "If they wanted us to shut up about what happened, show us the tapes. Don't burn 'em."

FAVRE UNRETIRES AGAIN

It's been two whole years since we saw retired (then unretired then retired then unretired then retired) quarterback Brett Favre, and he's coming back Sunday to work as an analyst during NFL Network's daylong Super Bowl coverage. The all-time leader in passing yards and TDs returns to the city where he led the Packers to a Super Bowl triumph in 1997. "Being involved in the Super Bowl was too much to pass up," he said.

N'AWLINS PLAYING SAFETY

Mardi Gras parades are underway, drunken revelers are tottering down Bourbon Street, cargo is flowing up and down the Mississippi, and, oh yeah, there's some kind of football game happening Sunday. But top cops say New Orleans is the safest city around this week. Extra law enforcement has been deployed, and the head of the FBI's New Orleans office said no credible terrorism threats have arisen. "This week, there is no safer place to be," special customs agent Raymond Parmer said.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, parents of both Super Bowl coaches, met the media to share their conflicted emotions on the matchup of sons John and Jim — and even shared a loving kiss from the interview dais.

"The one thing that I do think about is after the game there's going to be one winner and there's going to be one that's going to be totally disappointed," Jack said. "And my thoughts go to that one [who] will not experience the thrill of victory.

"I would honestly have to say that the birth of our own children and then the birth of our grandchildren are the most important to me," Jackie said. "And this is like frosting on the cake for our whole family."

Doctors: PED use not reason for A-Rod hip injury

If the Yankees are going to get out of paying the rest of Alex Rodriguez's contract, it likely will not be for medical reasons.

Regardless of whether the third baseman was caught taking performance-enhancing drugs again, two orthopedic surgeons said Wednesday they don't believe Rodriguez's hip injuries are enough to let the Yankees escape the $114 million they owe him over the next five seasons.

"If the more recent surgery was more involved, recovery might be a little slower, but I can't think of a reason why anyone would be able to say he couldn't play again," said Dr. James Gladstone, sports medicine specialist and co-chief of sports medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. "Especially if the other hip is holding up, there shouldn't be a lasting impact."

With Rodriguez embroiled in another PED controversy and his production dipping by the year, the Yankees will look at every avenue to distance themselves from him — especially if he gets suspended by the league.

Nevertheless, even if he is guilty, the Yankees don't figure to have much of a leg to stand on from a medical perspective.

"I still don't think any PED would have had an effect on the injury or the surgery," said Dr. David Geier, Director of Sports Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. "They can impact tendons and muscles, but not what he had. They might impact recovery, but I don't see the argument where the surgery itself would have been any different."

"Even if this turns out to be true, it wouldn't impact the hip joint. His problem was one of anatomy. I can't imagine any effect."

Hafner on Yankees’ radar

When the Yankees were trying to dump A.J. Burnett a year ago, one of the players they were interested in was Cleveland's Travis Hafner.

Despite their efforts, they weren't able to reach a deal with the Indians and Burnett ended up in Pittsburgh.

Now, Hafner has drawn the Yankees' attention again, and this time they don't have to figure out a way to include Burnett in the deal.

Still without a left-handed designated hitter to take over for Raul Ibanez — who signed with Seattle before general manager Brian Cashman made him an offer to stay in The Bronx — the Yankees are looking at the 35-year-old Hafner.

POWER BAT: The Yankees are looking at Travis Hafner to possibly become their left-handed DH.

Unlike Ibanez, whom the Yankees signed after failing to land Hafner last winter, the former first baseman can't play the field and would give the Yankees fewer options if they are hurt by injuries.

Hafner might not help the Yankees' durability, either, because he has had difficulty staying on the field after four excellent offensive seasons with the Indians from 2004-07, when he drove in more than 100 runs each year.

Cleveland remains interested in Hafner, though injury problems since then have robbed him of significant playing time. Last season, he was limited to just 263 plate appearances because of knee and back woes.

Nevertheless, when Hafner is able to remain in one piece, he does provide power.

Despite his injuries in 2012, Hafner hit 12 homers, including eight off right-handers, and his OPS was .798 versus righties — not much worse than Ibanez's OPS of .812 against them.

The Yankees signed Dan Johnson to a minor-league deal last week in an attempt to fill the spot, but their search for a lefty designated hitter does not include Jim Thome, another free-agent slugger with a history of back problems.

Though Hafner is a power-hitting lefty, he hasn't had a great deal of success taking advantage of the short right-field fence in The Bronx.

In 12 plate appearances at the new Yankee Stadium, Hafner has just one homer and one RBI. He also had just one homer and 12 RBIs in 75 plate appearances across the street.

A more pressing need remains in the outfield, but the Yankees have been unable to find a right-handed bat worthy of a major league contract.

Cashman has explored the free-agent route, as well as trades and still only managed to land players such as Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler on minor league deals, while Michael Morse and Scott Hairston have gone elsewhere.

Ravens LB Ray Lewis: We’ll bring trophy back to Baltimore

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 Januari 2013 | 17.08

NEW ORLEANS — Get ready for a lot of Ray Lewis.

Super Bowl XLVII is between the Ravens and 49ers, but there is no question who the star getting the most attention this week will be. Lewis, the retiring Ravens linebacker who is as polarizing off the field as he is productive on it, is going to be the center of attention.

It began in earnest yesterday with Lewis stopping just short of guaranteeing a Lombardi Trophy for the Ravens.

"We did this, we did this in 2000, and we are not going to New Orleans for nothing else but to bring back another ring back to Baltimore, where it belongs," Lewis said at a rally in Baltimore, referring to the team's first Super Bowl championship. "We love you, we love you, we love you, Baltimore. We are going to bring everything we got."

AP

KNOCK EM DEAD: Ray Lewis fires up Ravens fans at a rally in Baltimore before the team leaves for New Orleans.

This is Lewis' farewell tour — in case you've been living under a rock for the past four weeks. Sunday's game will be his career finale, and Lewis has been soaking up every ounce of attention along the way. After the Ravens arrived last night at their Hilton hotel in New Orleans, he held court with reporters. He quoted scripture, laughed about a "Saturday Night Live" skit depicting him and talked about leading his team to a Super Bowl title.

"What are we really here for?" Lewis said. "The bottom line is we're here to win a game. There's only two teams left right now. For us to be where we are right now, we have to finish what we started.

"We're here for a business trip."

No one disputes Lewis' ability, but the linebacker has been a source of controversy since he was investigated in a double murder in Atlanta in 2000. Lewis and the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV over the Giants a year later, and he took home the Super Bowl MVP.

Twelve years later, Lewis is back on the national stage. The murders are not as fresh in everyone's memory, but it's still part of Lewis' story. He said he thinks people now embrace him because of what he's been through.

"I don't know nobody that's ever lived a perfect life," Lewis said. "I have seen people who have went through things before, and realistically most of the time what happens when you find somebody who's gone through adversity, you really find out what their true character is.

"I think for me people really take time to find out who I really am. They're really learning what my character is, and my character is simply to make this world a better place, to encourage people that no matter what you're going through, it ain't really what you're going through, it's your mindset while you're going through it. When you see all the support I'm getting right now, I'm in total awe of the respect that people have for someone who has been through adversity but found his way out."

The 37-year-old announced at the beginning of the Ravens' playoff run he would retire at the end of the season. Their will be a ton of "lasts" this week for Lewis, but he said he's not focused on that.

"Honestly, I've already put it aside," Lewis said. "I promise you that's the last thing on my mind — is this the last, is this the last, is this the last? I think the most important thing for me is to be the leader I am for my team and try to go out and win this football game. That's the only thing on my mind."

As the Ravens felt the embrace from the Baltimore fans yesterday, Lewis told his teammates to enjoy it, but realize the next celebration would be better.

"This feeling is great, but there's nothing better than coming home as world champions," Lewis said he told them. "That's what we're here for, to bring a championship home to Baltimore."

Pressure the heart of matter for contending Compton

LA JOLLA, Calif. — This was a highly educational week for Erik Compton, the PGA Tour player playing with his third heart after two transplants.

Compton, who before this week had never finished better than a tie for 13th, finished tied for 15th at the Farmers Insurance Open at 6-under par after a final-round 75. It was the first time Compton was truly in contention on the weekend.

"Even though I've experienced different kind of pressures, this was just that you can't assess how loud it was out there and all the things that are going on,'' said Compton, who played the final two rounds in the group ahead of winner Tiger Woods. "Your adrenaline is going, and you have to learn how to [handle] that.

"I think mentally, my game is in a better place. I know how to manage it and not grind it out.''

Compton finished one shot out of a top-10 finish, which would have qualified him for this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open.

"I didn't really look at scoreboards,'' he said. "I just knew it was hard out there. It is [disappointing], but what are you going to do? I made birdie on the last hole. I guess it's better than a kick in the face.''

* Woods won the tournament for the seventh time, one behind the record held by Sam Snead, who won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times. It was the eighth time Woods won at Torrey Pines, including his playoff win in the 2008 U.S Open. … Woods, who always wears red shirts for his Sunday final rounds, did not wear red this Sunday for the completion of the third round and beginning of the fourth because he said he was saving it for yesterday's conclusion. He wore his customary red yesterday.

The next event Woods is likely to play is the Match Play next month in Arizona. After that, he'll play the Honda Classic, Doral and Bay Hill — all in March in Florida.

His caddie, Joe LaCava, said he has been trying to convince Woods to play at Riviera in Los Angeles, where he said he thinks Woods would be very successful. Woods never plays Riviera because it doesn't fit his schedule.

* Brad Fritsch, the rookie from Canada, birdied his last two holes for a 75 and tied for ninth, making him eligible for the Phoenix Open. Fritsch had been entered into yesterday's qualifier, which he had to abandon when the Farmers Insurance Open lost Saturday to a fog delay and had to be completed yesterday.

* The best comeback of the week came from Rickie Fowler, who shook off an opening-round 77 to finish in a tie for sixth after shooting a final-round 68. His 77 was the highest opening-round score for any player who made the cut. … Aaron Baddeley, who was never in serious contention, closed with rounds of 68-69 to sneak into a tie for sixth. … Josh Teater finished in a tie for second with defending champion Brandt Snedeker at 10-under par, his best PGA Tour finish. … The best final-round scores came from Jason Day (66) and Robert Garrigus (67).

Forgiving Lewis doesn’t give Hoot about Mrs. Welker diss

NEW ORLEANS — Ray Lewis sounds like a minister sometimes when he speaks, and when the topic of Anna Welker, the wife of Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, came up last night, he sounded like Father Ray.

Anna Welker, a former Miss Hooters International,, wrote some unkind things about Lewis on her Facebook page after the Ravens beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game last week. Lewis said he won't hold a grudge.

"I truly forgive her," Lewis said. "I don't have no hard feelings against her at all. But I believe people make mistakes and say foolish things."

WireImage

Anna Welker

Welker made reference to Lewis' past when he faced murder charges and also referenced his personal life.

"Proud of my husband and the Pats," she wrote. "By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!"

She later issued an apology.

"I've always been a firm believer of the good book," Lewis said. "The good book confirms even a fool is counted wise until he opens his or her mouth. Sometimes people just say silly stuff and they say it out of emotion."

Thank you, Rex, from your exes.

"All I can really say is that I love the man to death," Suggs said last night. "He's one helluva football coach, he's one helluva ball coach. If it is his last year as a New York Jet head coach, it won't be his last year as a coach, it damn sure won't be his last year as a head coach. He's a players' coach, he's a real coach, and I wish him all the best. I hope things turn around for him, except when he's playing the Baltimore Ravens."

Suggs was asked if he was concerned when Ryan left as Ravens defensive coordinator to coach the Jets in 2009.

"I wouldn't say concerned, but me, Rex and Mike Pettine [a Ravens assistant who followed Ryan to the Jets to become defensive coordinator], we have a relationship that's more than football," Suggs said. "Like I said, I love the man, I think the world of him. When he left, it was just, 'Congratulations, Rex, I love you, but whenever I face you, just know I'm aiming to kick your ass, so you better bring it.' And he said, 'I will bring it so you better bring it.' "

Suggs was then asked for a Rex anecdote.

"I don't have really any anecdotes, some things are just sacred, some things you don't let out of the meeting room, out of your locker room, but just know he's a rare breed of coach, and. . .

"He turned boys into beasts. Not into men, he turned 'em into beasts."

How did he do that?

"I don't know ... you gotta ask Rex," Suggs said.

And, as if Ryan and Mark Sanchez didn't have enough problems, there is speculation Reed could be signed by Bill Belichick and the Patriots in free agency.

Ryan was the Ravens' defensive line coach when Reed was the 2002 first-round draft choice and Suggs was the 2003 first-round draft choice. By 2005, he was the defensive coordinator. Lewis, who joined the Ravens three years prior to Ryan's arrival, was the 1996 first-round draft choice. Nose tackle Haloti Ngata also learned the ways of Rex, a first-round pick in 2006.

Suggs was asked about Rex's tattoo.

"Last I checked it was 49ers-Ravens, I didn't know Jets was nowhere around here," Suggs said.

Then Suggs answered the tattoo question.

"Who cares? I probably got something on my ass that you all never will see," Suggs said. "It's probably inappropriate, but who cares? I think you all blew it way out of proportion. I don't really think it's a big deal.

"I think everybody should have a certain amount of privacy even if they're in the public eye, no matter who they are. Even our president deserves a certain amount of privacy. ... I think all of you need to keep that in mind when you're all writing stories about us, we're not just football players, we're not just coaches, we're human brings too."

Reed was at the end of his media session when I asked him about Rex.

"Oh man, I love Rex," he said. "Keep it likeable and learnable. There's so much I can say about Rex, man. I love Rex, man."

What made you love Rex so much?

"That's my coach, man. Rex my coach."

Tiger cruises at fave course, generating more ‘back’ talk

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Every time Tiger Woods tees it up at a tournament, we take his temperature. We analyze the state of his game and the state of his mind.

We want to know if he's back.

Ever since the fire hydrant and the subsequent public unraveling of his personal life in 2009 evaporated the aura of dominance and invincibility around Woods, the answer has been a resounding, "No.''

No, Woods has not been the same since the end of '09, the end of his marriage and the unprecedented fall from grace that ensued.

Even in winning three tournaments last year — a career's worth for many players — Woods faltered in the events that matter most — the majors, in which he looked far more human than he ever did when he dominated, struggling in the late rounds.

Getty Images

Tiger Woods

So Woods was not back last year, not even with the three wins, because he is not measured in mere wins, he is measured by the majors he wins.

Woods this week teased us again, yesterday finishing the job at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, his personal playground, cruising to a four-shot victory that was never in question for most of the week.

There was significance to the win in that, more than he did in any of his three wins last year, Woods looked like his old self, which is to say unbeatable.

"I don't know if anybody would have beaten him this week,'' said Nick Watney, the 2009 winner here who finished third at 9-under.

Hunter Mahan, who like Woods works with swing coach Sean Foley, said, "I think he wanted to send a message."

"I think deep down he did,'' Mahan said. "He looked strong. He had great control of his swing. He was hitting some strong shots, different from any other player I saw out here."

Woods' victory was the 75th PGA Tour win of his career, second only to the great Sam Snead's 82 Tour victories.

It was his seventh win of the PGA Tour event held at Torrey Pines and the his eighth overall on the course, counting his 2008 U.S. Open win on the course, his last major championship title.

With the tournament having been extended to a Monday finish because of the fog that nullified Saturday play, Woods took a six-shot lead into yesterday with 11 holes to play.

It marked the 54th career tournament Woods has carried at least a share of the lead into the final round and the 50th time he's converted it into a victory.

He built his lead to as many as eight shots after a birdie on the par-5 13th hole got him to 18-under. Giving back four shots in the final five holes (a bogey on 14, a double on 15 and a bogey on 17), blemished the rout he had going on, but Woods owned this tournament all week and yesterday was a mere coronation.

"In the end, I just started losing my patience,'' Woods said, referring to incredibly slow play in front of him. "I had an eight-‑shot lead, so I just needed to stay upright and I was going to be fine.''

Woods' win inched him closer to one of his primary goals, to return to the No. 1 ranking. Rory McIlroy, who was not in the field this week, has that mantle.

"Of course he's got [McIlroy] in his sights,'' Woods' caddie, Joe LaCava, said. "He loves Rory, but he knows he wants to get past him, sure. He's making headway. We don't really talk about it, but I know it's important to him. Nothing needs to be said.''

The next event Woods and McIlroy will be in together is the match-play championship next month in Arizona. The next full-field event they'll be in together is the Honda Classic in March in Florida.

Of returning to No. 1, Woods said, "That happens through a product of winning golf tournaments. That's how I got there in the first place. That's how [McIlroy] got there. In order for me to get back there, that's what I have to do. And this is a nice start.

"Does it feel good? Yes. Does it give me confidence? Absolutely.''

Did this win tell us that Woods is back?

"I never left,'' Woods said.

Plan on immig reform

Written By Unknown on Senin, 28 Januari 2013 | 17.08

A bipartisan group of leading senators last night reached agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation's immigration laws.

The deal, which was to be announced at a news conference this afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada tomorrow tolay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles today are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado. The Republicans who back the measure include John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Now, with some Republicans chastened by the results of the November elections — which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats — some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle — including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle — that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration-reform bill," McCain said yesterday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain added.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published yesterday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

The principles being released today are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans.

JonBenet ‘indict’ shocker

The Colorado grand jury looking into the murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey voted to indict the little beauty queen's parents 13 years ago — but prosecutors declined to press the case, a bombshell new report claims.

The grand jury voted in 1999 to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on charges of child abuse resulting in death, a Class II felony that can carry up to 48 years in prison, sources told Colorado's Boulder Daily Camera newspaper.

But, the paper said, Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter never revealed the vote results — and, in fact, refused to sign an indictment.

He announced the end of the investigation, telling the media, "I and my prosecution task force believe we do not have sufficient evidence to warrant a filing of charges against anyone who has been investigated at this time."

JonBenet was murdered in her family's Boulder home on Christmas Day in 1996.

A lawyer for John Ramsey, 69, yesterday hailed Hunter's actions.

"If what you report actually happened, then there were some very professional and brave people in Alex's office," attorney Bryan Morgan told the Camera.

Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006, at age 49.

Experts are unclear whether the DA acted properly in not signing the indictment, the paper said.

Chris Brown, Frank Ocean fight outside of LA studio: report

AP

Chris Brown (L) and Frank Ocean's feud turned violent Sunday, with the two engaging in a fight outside of a Los Angeles recording studio.

Chris Brown is at it again ...

The hotheaded musician was involved in a brawl with R&B singer Frank Ocean outside of a Los Angeles recording studio Sunday night, TMZ reports.

The fight reportedly happened when Ocean's crew blocked Chris from leaving - with someone attacking Chris as he tried to shake Ocean's hand.

Ocean, who cut his finger in the fight, took to Twitter following the melee.

"got jumped by chris and a couple guys. lol. i only wish everest was there," he wrote. Everest is the name of the singer's Bernese mountain dog.

He also hinted that the injury could impact his performance at the Grammys.

The pair had previously battled online in 2011, back before Brown deactivated his Twitter account.

Last year, Brown was involved in a bottle-throwing melee at the Manhattan club W.i.P., receiving a gash on his chin.

WATCH: Adam Levine gets celebrity comedy advice on 'SNL'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 | 17.08

NBC

Adam Levine received hosting advice from Andy Samberg, Cameron Diaz and Jerry Seinfeld on this weekend's episode of "Saturday Night Live."

Of course Adam Levine took his shirt off during his "Saturday Night Live" monologue. He just needed some celebrity prodding first.

The heavily-inked Maroon 5 singer worried that he was "over-reaching" by dabbling in acting. So he weighed advice from a panel of prospective comedy coaches - SNL alum Andy Samberg, actress Cameron Diaz and Jerry Seinfeld - with the three emerging on spinning chairs to parody Levine's hit talent show "The Voice."

Samberg's cameo marked his first appearance on the show since he left at the end of last season.

"What are you doing here?" Levine asked.

"I could ask myself the same question," Samberg said, playboy-esque with a robe and prop pipe. "I was in over 100 digital shorts as well as three live sketches, and I've dealt with my share of singers-turned-actors." Of course he mentioned Justin Timberlake, the gold standard of contemporary SNL hosts.

Diaz, meanwhile, told Levine he needs to check his ego - and do anything for a laugh, including shedding his shirt.

"You have to be able to take a handful of Ben Stiller's spooge and stick it right in your hair," she said, recalling an iconic scene from her movie "There's Something About Mary."

Seinfeld, meanwhile, urged Levine to keep his shirt on - saying that like himself, Levine is "not as Jewish as your name ... I know that racket inside and out. I spent nine years on this network, threading that needle."

The episode began with President Obama (Jay Pharoah), celebrating on the night of his nomination, summoned by the ghost of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Kenan Thompson).

But while Obama wanted to talk politics, a 21st Century, celebutainment-wise MLK focused on Beyonce's backside and Michelle's new hairstyle.

"Did you see that girl Beyonce?" Dr. King asked. "Did you see her out there? I was like, 'what' ... I had to keep pinching myself."

Evidently King wasn't too worried about Beyonce's lip-syncing. But FLOTUS's haircut - "Is she guest-starring on 'The New Girl?' When she gets a haircut, she's going to say 'thank God almighty, I can see at last.'"

King and Obama opined about racial progress, how we have an African-American president but no black members of One Direction.

Casey Anthony: I'm flat broke

TAMPA, Fla. — Casey Anthony filed for bankruptcy in Florida on Friday, claiming about $1,100 in assets and $792,000 in liabilities.

Court records show that Anthony, who was acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2011, sought Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in federal court in Tampa.

Her listed debts include $500,000 for attorney fees and costs for her criminal defense lawyer during the trial, Jose Baez; $145,660 for the Orange County Sheriff's office for a judgment covering investigative fees and costs related to the case; $68,540 for the Internal Revenue Service for taxes, interest and penalties; and $61,505 for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for court costs.

AP

Casey Anthony

The filling also states that she is a defendant in several civil suits, including one brought by Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez for defamation in Orange County Circuit Court.

Fernandez-Gonzalez claims her reputation was damaged by Anthony telling detectives that a baby sitter by the same name kidnapped Caylee. The detectives were investigating the 2008 disappearance of the girl, who later was found dead. Anthony's attorney said details offered by Anthony did not match Fernandez-Gonzalez and clearly showed Anthony wasn't talking about her.

Court papers list Anthony as unemployed, with no recent income.

An attorney for Anthony, David Schrader, did not immediately respond to messages from the Associated Press.

Anthony lists about 80 creditors in the 60-page court filing. The claims largely cover fees for legal, medical, psychiatric and forensics consulting or services. But one claim covers a debt for scuba diving services.

According to the courts, the aim of seeking Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection is to be discharged of most existing debts — essentially to obtain a fresh financial start. A trustee may have the right to take possession of and sell non-exempt property and use the sale proceeds to pay creditors, but Anthony lists little in the way of assets. A debtor may still be held responsible for some obligations, such as taxes and student loans.

The filing came on the same day that a Florida appellate court set aside two of the four convictions she faced for lying to detectives during the investigation into her missing daughter.

Though Anthony was acquitted of killing Caylee, jurors convicted her of four counts of lying to detectives, and her attorneys appealed those convictions. Anthony was sentenced to time served for the misdemeanors.

She was sentenced to a year of probation after her release from jail for an unrelated case. For her protection, her whereabouts have been kept secret since she was released from state supervision last year.

While reinstated Saints coach Sean Payton said he's in no hurry to replace the fired Steve Spagnuolo at defensive coordinator, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted two candidates the team will consider are ex-Jets' head coach Eric Mangini and former Giants' assistant Romeo Crennel.

When reached, Mangini said he has not been contacted by anybody from the Saints .

HOOPS: Jones leads Iona to win

Lamont Jones scored 24 points and all five Iona starters scored in double figures in a 90-71 MAAC victory over Saint Peter's in New Rochelle.

Emmy Andjuar had 12 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as visiting Loyola (Md.) beat Manhattan 51-41 .

In Los Angeles, Metta World Peace hit five 3-pointers on his way to scoring 17 points and the Lakers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Jazz 102-84, snapping a four-game skid.

Kyle Korver scored 27 points and the Hawks overcame a 27-point deficit in the first half to beat Boston 123-111 in double-overtime, handing the visiting Celtics their sixth straight loss.

In Miami, Dwyane Wade scored 29 points to help the Heat earn their fourth victory in a row by beating the Pistons 110-88. Between quarters, Michael Drysch, a 50-year-old computer technician from McHenry, Ill., made a half-court shot to win $75,000 and a hug from LeBron James.

ETC.: Wagner's Hameline honored

Wagner College head football coach Walt Hameline was named the 2012 College Sports Journal FCS National Coach of the Year after leading the Seahawks (9-4) to the school's first Northeast Conference title, and an FCS playoff win over Colgate.

Under a rule change imposed by MLB, pitchers will no longer be allowed to fake a pickoff to third base and throw to first as a way to dupe a runner on first base into breaking for second. Next season, that move will be a balk. Pitchers still can step off the rubber and fake to third.

The change was approved at the owners' meetings two weeks ago.

Bruins’ rally sinks Islanders in DiPietro’s return

BOSTON — Islanders' center Keith Aucoin had his first career two-goal game on Friday night, but he was the only member of his team to score as the Islanders fell to the Bruins, 4-2.

Rick DiPietro, playing his first game since Dec. 3, 2011, after last season was cut short by a groin injury, made 23 saves for the Islanders.

"I felt good," said the former Boston University star, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NHL draft. "It's always exciting playing back here in Boston, and I always look forward to playing in this building. I was excited."

The Islanders (2-2) played the second of five straight on the road after scoring six unanswered goals to beat Toronto 7-4 on Thursday.

"For the most part we were up to the challenge, but couldn't get it done," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said.

The Islanders are 3-15-1 in their last 19 games against the Bruins.

The game featured a matchup of the NHL's best two penalty-killing units this season. The Bruins have turned aside all 17 short-handed situations, and the Islanders improved to 13 for 13.

Zdeno Chara scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, Hamilton had two assists, and Tuukka Rask made 24 saves.

Patrice Bergeron, Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell also scored for Boston, which improved to 3-0-1.

But it was 19-year old defenseman Dougie Hamilton who brought chants of "Doug-ie! Doug-ie!" echoing around TD Garden late in the game.

"I was just trying not to fumble the puck," said Hamilton, who broke into a smile while surrounded by reporters as he sat at his locker. "It's obviously nice to hear the support. It's pretty cool."

When the season started, Boston had six games to decide to keep him or send him back to juniors. The experiment might be complete.

"I think that's why our guys drafted him," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "Those are the kinds of things we saw in him. We're pretty happy with what he's done."

Hamilton assisted on Boston's first and final goals of the game.

"It's great," Rask said of the chants. "He's such a great player. He's just going to get better."

Hamilton isn't even over the fact that he is playing in the NHL.

"It feels so weird being out there instead of watching it," he said.

Boston took a 3-2 lead 7:07 into the third when Milan Lucic circled from behind the net and fed Chara, who fired a wrist shot past DiPietro's glove inside the left post from the high slot.

Bergeron scored on a breakaway with 6:27 to play, shifting a few times before tucking in a forehand shot.

Chara hit the left post in the closing minute with a backhand shot from the blue line after the Islanders pulled DiPietro for an extra skater.

The Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead 4:52 into the game. Thornton, benched Wednesday for a good portion of Boston's 4-3 overtime road loss to the Rangers after a giveaway led to a goal, backhanded in the rebound of Hamilton's shot from the left point.

The Islanders tied it on Aucoin's goal midway into the period. Aucoin came charging into the slot and redirected Colin McDonald's pass from behind the net past Rask.

Aucoin got to an errant clearing attempt in the high slot and unloaded a slap shot past Rask's glove to give the Islanders a 2-1 edge midway into the second, but the Bruins tied it less than 4 minutes later. Campbell controlled a rebound in front and put the puck past DiPietro.

Nets' won't stir pot about All-Star snub

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — If Brook Lopez was upset about being left out of this year's All-Star Game, he did a good job of hiding it.

The Nets center, considered by many to be the most deserving player not headed to Houston for next month's All-Star festivities, took the high road when he met with reporters before the Nets' 101-77 loss to the Grizzlies Friday night.

"I was a little disappointed that there was no one from our team at all," Lopez said, who scored 18 points and had three blocks. "It's tough for me to envision a team with the best players in the Eastern Conference not include Deron [Williams] or Joe [Johnson]."

Though the Nets felt their backcourt was All-Star worthy, the biggest snub on the team was clearly Lopez, who leads all NBA centers in scoring and entered last night's action as the only player averaging more than 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

"I just thought Brook should have made it," Williams said. "I thought he was an All-Star this year. He's been the most consistent for us all year and has played consistent basketball, so for him to not make it, we feel hurt for him. That's the main thing."

Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo was incredulous as well.

"They must just feel our chemistry is unbelievable," Carlesimo said, "because we're winning games with limited talent here."

With Kevin Garnett being voted in and the league's coaches choosing to select big men Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah and Chris Bosh, it was clear Lopez wound up being the odd-man out among a talented group.

But when he was asked if he was a better player than any of the others who made the team ahead of him, Lopez passed on the chance to stir up controversy.

"I think they're very deserving All-Stars," he said. "They're huge parts of their team."

When the reserves were announced on TNT Thursday night, analysts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith said they thought part of the reason the Nets went unrepresented was because of the coaches taking into account the fact Avery Johnson had been fired last month.

"I don't know," Williams said with a sigh when asked for a reaction. "I guess Brook got him fired, too. People say what they want."

Carlesimo clearly wasn't thrilled with that theory, either.

"The TNT guys know what the coaches were thinking about," Carlesimo said sarcastically. "Most people can't read minds, so those guys knew what the coaches were thinking about. They're the only ones who really knew what went into those selections."

But, regardless of their reasoning, the Nets are without an All-Star, something practically everyone in the organization didn't think was a possibility before Thursday's announcement.

"I just think you can very easily and very intellectually make a case for all three of our guys being on the team, particularly when you couple it with the fact that we're up fairly high in the Eastern Conference," Carlesimo said. "It's just disappointing that the coaches didn't see it that way. But I said all along it's the other 14 coaches that are going to determine it, and I believe that they voted the correct way, and if they voted the correct way, that's just how the coaches feel."

Celtics coach knows what Shumpert went through to return to Knicks

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 25 Januari 2013 | 17.08

BOSTON — Celtics coach Doc Rivers knows exactly what Knicks guard Iman Shumpert went through coming back from a torn ACL in his left knee. It's a been there, done that kind of thing.

"If you're not a worker, you will not come back from that injury. But if you are, I think we found out you can come back just as good and maybe even better," Rivers said when discussing Shumpert. "Mentally tougher, stronger and just as athletic now. And I think that's what you'll see in Iman."

Shumpert, who started his third game for the Knicks Thursday night, tore his ACL and meniscus last May and was out for nine months before returning during the Knicks' recent trip to London. In the Knicks' 89-86 win, he played 27 minutes, racking up 10 points and five rebounds — all personal bests for his three games.

Rivers was out basically a full year. As a Knick, he blew out his left ACL in December, 1993 and returned the following December.

"I went through it with the Knicks and I think I was one of the first guys to actually have a chance at getting back. Our goal was eight months, which at that time was unheard of and we proved you could do that," Rivers said.

"You find out a lot about yourself. I think you grow up. It's not an injury you want and hopefully at that point in my career I had grown up — I was in my 30's when I injured mine. But it's one of those injuries that requires you to work."

Nets’ Watson warned for flopping

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Nets guard C.J. Watson was warned by the NBA for flopping Thursday for a play in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's win at Minnesota.

The warning comes as no surprise after Watson all but admitted to flopping to draw an offensive foul on serial offender J.J. Barea with nine minutes to go in the fourth of what became a 91-83 Nets win.

"J.J. Barea's a flopping guy, so I tried to give him a taste of his own medicine," Watson told the YES Network in a postgame interview. "I hope I don't get fined, though."

If Watson violates the league's new anti-flopping rules again, he would be subjected to a $5,000 fine. Nets forwards Reggie Evans and Gerald Wallace already have been fined by the league for flopping this season.

******

Nets rookies Tornike Shengelia and Tyshawn Taylor put up big numbers for the Springfield Armor, the Nets' D-League affiliate.

Shengelia, who had a triple-double in his first game with Springfield last month, tied the Armor's franchise record with 39 points to go along with 18 rebounds and six assists. Taylor also played well, finishing with 21 points and 10 assists.

LIU topples St. Francis to win Brooklyn battle

Liu Brooklyn is back in the Northeast Conference title hunt.

The two-time defending league champions, a long shot just two weeks ago after starting 0-3 in the NEC and losing reigning player of the year Julian Boyd to a torn ACL, won their fourth straight contest Thursday night, 78-68, over rival St. Francis in the Battle of Brooklyn.

It was a dramatic comeback in front of a standing room only crowd on the Terriers' home court in downtown Brooklyn. The Blackbirds trailed by as many as 14 points early in the second half before a furious barrage of 3-pointers and transition baskets sent them to their fifth straight victory over the Terriers, ninth in the last 10 contests and seventh straight at St. Francis.

"The whole year I've used the word resilience; we've shown a lot of resilience," senior forward Jamal Olasewere said after LIU exploded for 57 second-half points on 75 percent shooting. "When we're down, we don't give up. That's just Blackbird basketball."

With the win and NEC-leading Bryant's loss to Sacred Heart, LIU is just two games off the pace with plenty of season left.

"We're just trying to get better, trying to create our own identity," LIU coach Jack Perri said. "We had to change our identity a little bit with Julian out. We've really focused on defense and rebounding in practice. Our last few games we did a good job with that."

After shooting just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first half, the 3-ball carried LIU to victory. The Blackbirds (9-10, 4-3) made 7-of-11 attempts from distance in the second half — most of them during a rapid-fire 26-6 run —- as C.J. Gardner (game-high 22 points) and Brandon Thompson (14) caught fire. Olasewere had his way in the paint, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and point guard Jason Brickman added 11 assists.

"He started to find everybody," Gardner said of Brickman. "It really got us going, He's a great passer, best passer I've ever played with, best passer I've ever seen."

Even LIU's defense, a season-long weakness, was strong after halftime, limiting St. Francis to 38 percent shooting. They challenged shots and cleaned up the defensive glass, which led to fast break opportunities they cashed in.

"We're an explosive team; you add a little defense and it changes everything," Olasewere said.

With each 3-pointer, LIU seemed to gain confidence, getting back the swagger it had in reaching the NCAA Tournament the last two years. After one 3-pointer, Gardner eye-balled the red-clad St. Francis crowd and playfully smiled as he jogged downcourt.

"It's morphed into these guys figuring out what they need to do and C.J. getting more aggressive," Perri said. "You start gaining some confidence when you get some wins and it snowballs. Right now we're in that mode."

Jalen Cannon had 21 points and 10 rebounds for St. Francis, which is tied for third place in the NEC with LIU after dropping another contest to its nemesis.

"It was like two different games," St. Francis coach Glenn Braica said. "We need to step up in that situation instead of letting the game unfold [like it did]."

Tsonga: Women players ‘more unstable than us’

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has a theory as to why women's tennis top seeds seem to fall earlier in some draws than men do.

"You know, the girls, they are more unstable than us," Tsonga told reporters yesterday after a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. "I'm sure everybody will say it's true, even the girls."

Tsonga, who also jokingly took a racket swing at Federer during their match, was asked why the men always seem to have the top four seeds in major semifinals. A reporter then followed up with a question about why it doesn't always seem to be that way for the women.

CAN OF WORMS: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost to Roger Federer in yesterday's Australian Open quarterfinals, said the top-ranked men's players advance more consistently in tournaments because women players, like Serena Williams (above), are more unstable because of hormonal issues.

Tsonga didn't stop there.

"But, I mean, it's just about hormones and all this stuff," the Frenchman said. "We don't have all these bad things, so we are physically in a good shape every time, and you are not. That's it."

These views likely will draw the ire of Serena Williams and other female players. Williams, the No. 3 seed, slammed and broke her racket in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss to No. 29 Sloane Stephens on Wednesday in a women's quarterfinal match.

In the men's semifinals, No. 1 Novak Djokovic faced No. 4 David Ferrer in a night match and No. 2 Federer takes on No. 3 Andy Murray tomorrow.

NFL executives high on Jets’ new GM

MOBILE, Ala. — Rod Graves laughs about the meeting now. It was the early-1990s on a practice field at Duke University when he saw his old friend John Idzik.

The two had been ballboys together with the Philadelphia Eagles, both the teenage sons of members of the Eagles organization. Graves had lost track of his old friend before running into Idzik, then a graduate assistant for the Blue Devils, while on a scouting trip for the Bears.

Idzik told Graves that he had been working at IBM after graduating from Dartmouth with a degree in mathematics when he decided to quit and take an entry-level football job at Duke.

GANG POWER: John Idzik (right), who will be introduced as the Jets new GM at a press conference today, sits with owner Woody Johnson and coach Rex Ryan during Senior Bowl practices yesterday.

"He told me, 'I just had this nagging desire to get into pro football,' " Graves, fired as the Cardinals GM on New Year's Eve, recounted this week. "He said, 'I quit my job at IBM making six figures. Here I am a GA on salary on Duke University.' I said, 'What in the hell have you been drinking?' At first, you had to think he was off his rocker.

"It ended up working out very well for him."

Idzik will be introduced this morning as the new general manager of the Jets at a news conference at the team's headquarters in Florham Park, N.J. The 52-year old son of a coach has risen from a low-level assistant coach at Duke to one of the most powerful jobs in the NFL.

The questions will be plenty today for Idzik, who faces what figures to be the ultimate test of his 20-year career in the NFL. He joins a Jets team coming off a 6-10 season that has salary-cap problems, uncertainty at quarterback, a roster lacking much star power and an inherited head coach.

Graves, who brought Idzik to the Cardinals in 2004, believes the Jets found the perfect person to fix their team.

"He's probably one of the brightest guys I've ever worked with in terms of dealing with rosters and players and the finance behind player salaries and so forth," Graves said. "He's very well organized. I think he does a great job at future projections and roster management for making decisions today that will allow for flexibility down the road. He's very good at that."

Idzik attended the Senior Bowl practices this week here, his first duties as Jets GM. He sat yesterday alongside Jets owner Woody Johnson, who flew down to spend some time with his new hire. He and head coach Rex Ryan have spent the past three days getting to know each other. Their relationship will be under close scrutiny. Ryan, who has two years left on his contract, could be coaching for his job this season with Idzik as the person who controls his fate.

Idzik, Ryan and Johnson all declined to speak with reporters this week, waiting for today's formal news conference.

Plenty of other people were talking about Idzik at the Senior Bowl. The hire was praised in NFL circles. Idzik is a popular person with agents and with fellow executives. Many of them believe he will not only help the Jets on the field, but also improve their image off of it, where they have been characterized as a circus under Ryan.

According to a source, Johnson did not want anyone who had ever worked with Ryan before. Part of what he was looking for in a new GM was someone to rein Ryan in.

"They hired a grown up," one league source said. "He will change the culture there. He is just what [Ryan] needs."

The only knock on Idzik has been his limited personnel experience. He spent the past six seasons as the Seahawks vice president of football administration. His primary responsibilities were negotiating contracts and managing the team's salary cap. But he also did some scouting for the Seahawks last year. Idzik's son attends Wake Forest and Seahawks GM John Schneider said Idzik did a lot of scouting in that region for the team.

"He's a lifelong football guy," Schneider said. "He's been raised in the industry. He has a strong passion for the game. He has knowledge in scouting, coaching, obviously his salary cap work."

Idzik grew up with his father coaching in the NFL. His father even spent three years as the Jets offensive coordinator under Walt Michaels in the late-1970s. Idzik played wide receiver at Dartmouth and never shook the football bug.

He eventually joined the Buccaneers in their personnel department and spent 11 seasons there, rising up to assistant GM and helping build a Super Bowl winner. Graves brought him to Arizona as the senior director of football operations and then he went to Seattle.

Now, his football life gets another chapter. No one thinks he's crazy for walking away from IBM now.

"I think the Jets organization is getting a very smart, even-keeled man," Schneider said. "He is a team player but he has very strong beliefs. I'm sure he's expressed those beliefs to Mr. Johnson."

Reinstated Payton seeks ‘closure’ to Bountygate scandal

MOBILE, Ala. — Wednesday was the first day of the rest of Sean Payton's coaching career, and the Saints' newly reinstated sideline boss was only looking ahead.

Fresh from the early lifting of his one-year Bountygate suspension, Payton faced the media here yesterday after scouting Senior Bowl practices less than 24 hours after his reprieve was announced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Payton was contrite during the 45-minute session with reporters at Ladd-Peebles Stadium but expressed no bitterness toward Goodell and didn't offer much in the way of specifics about the alleged cash-for-injuries scandal.

"We're at a point where it's time for closure," Payton said when asked by The Post if the Saints had an organized bounty system under him like the league alleged. "It's time for us as a team, it's time for us as a league, to take this next step forward.

Payton, a former Giants offensive coordinator, met with Goodell for nearly five hours in Manhattan on Monday before the NFL announced the following day that his suspension was being lifted early and immediately.

Payton said he and Goodell agreed not to discuss the specifics of their meeting. The timing of the NFL's announcement was certainly convenient for Goodell, who still is extremely unpopular in New Orleans as he heads there next week for the Super Bowl.

Payton, who pleaded with Saints fans to be "gracious" toward Goodell, said he was just glad to put the difficult year behind him and to be able to focus on getting the Saints back to prominence after they finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs under a pair of interim coaches in 2012.

"We've got a lot of tough meetings ahead," Payton said of the Saints. "That's what 7-9 is. Those are our biggest challenges."

The Saints, who rewarded Payton with a lucrative contract extension through 2017 during his suspension, certainly were glad Payton's back.

"We certainly miss Sean in terms of the football team and all the things that go with our business and the game," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said while attending Senior Bowl practices. "I miss his friendship. We all miss his friendship. We miss him as a person."The NFL's announcement came out of the blue but wasn't exactly unexpected, considering the suspensions of the players allegedly involved — ex-Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove — had been overturned on appeal by former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue last month. The suspensions of Payton, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Loomis and assistant coach Joe Vitt were carried out, however, though Payton didn't end up serving his entire ban and Williams has been freed to seek a job with another NFL team. Payton reacted icily when asked if he would be interested in bringing back Williams. "I have no interest in talking to Gregg," Payton said. Nor did Payton have any interest in going anywhere other than New Orleans, despite speculation during the season that he could be headed to the Cowboys because his contract was up. "There was no way I was going to another team," Payton said.

Stephens, Sharapova fall in semis

MELBOURNE, Australia—Victoria Azarenka overcame a sore left ankle, some anxietyand a slew of frustrating forehand errors before fending off American teenager Sloane Stephens to reach the Australian Open final against Li Na.

For the second time in two days, 19-year-old Stephens sat patiently on a courtside chair during a medical timeout by an experienced, older player late in the second set.

Today, the top-seeded Azarenka returned to finish off a 6-1, 6-4 win on her sixth match point. It had been a different outcome Wednesday, when Stephens rallied from a set and a break down to beat an injured Serena Williams in three sets.

Azarenka said in an on-court interview that she "almost did the choke of the year"when she wasted five match points onserve at 5-3 in the second, mostly with unforced errors on her forehand.

She went to the locker room for medical treatment after dropping that game, then returned to break the 29th-seeded Stephens' serve to finish off the match.

The 23-year-old Azarenka later said the treatment was for chest pain.

"I couldn't breathe. I had chest pains," she said. "It was like I was getting a heart attack."

The temperature hit 97 degrees during the second women's semifinal, slightly hotter than it had been when Li Na beat No. 2 ranked Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Australian Open final for the second time in three years.

Sharapova was the heavy favorite after conceding only nine games in her first five matches, a record at the Australian Open.

But the semifinal started badly for the 25-year-old Russian, serving double-faults to lose the first two points and conceding a break in the first game.

Li was the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam final when she lost to Kim Clijsters at Melbourne Park in 2011. She had her breakthrough a few months later when she won the French Open, beating Sharapova in the semifinals along the way.

Unbelievable story is not to be believed

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 23 Januari 2013 | 17.08

headshot

Steve Serby

So let me get this straight: A coach would be willing to throw the Super Bowl so his buddy, coaching the other team, would win because he hated the organization he was able to get to the Super Bowl.

I'd sooner believe Manti Te'o's girlfriend was real.

Ten years later, we are hearing from Tim Brown and Jerry Rice that Raiders coach Bill Callahan changed the game plan two days before Super Bowl XXXVII so Jon Gruden and the Bucs could hoist the Lombardi Trophy? That Callahan would sacrifice a moment of crowning glory to allow Gruden, who left as Raiders coach, to stick it to Al Davis?

I'd sooner believe anything Lance Armstrong says.

"We all called it sabotage," Brown says.

I call it rubbish.

"Give me a break," Gruden texted USA Today.

Give all of us a break, too.

I'd sooner believe Callahan was driven to change the game plan because he feared Gruden knew Raiders tendencies like the back of his hand.

Or would it be too far-fetched to believe the late Davis, first-ballot Paranoid Hall of Famer, may have ordered his puppet coach to change the game plan?

I'd almost sooner believe former Baltimore Colts defensive end Bubba Smith, who wrote in a book that the Super Bowl III Jets' 16-7 upset for the ages was fixed.

"This might sound crazy," Smith said, "but I don't think the game was kosher. In order for the [AFL-NFL] merger to go through, [the Jets] had to win."

This accusation is crazier.

The Raiders quarterback that day was Rich Gannon, now a CBS analyst.

"He is a good football coach," Gannon said of Callahan on Sirius XM NFL Radio. "He is a good man. I don't think he would intentionally ever [not try to win]. There was too much vested in trying to become world champion. We all wanted to win. I'm sure Bill Callahan was one of them."

Here's what people seem to have forgotten: Marc Trestman, the new Bears coach, called the plays, not Callahan.

I was at the game. Gruden had the better team, case closed. And Gruden was the better coach, case closed. The Raiders couldn't run the ball and fell behind and probably didn't change the verbiage and terminology enough.

Center Barret Robbins bolted because he was upset the game plan was changed? It was reported at the time he had some kind of breakdown.

And people tell me Callahan was devastated for a long time after the game.

Eric Mangini vouched for Callahan's character last night. I expect many others to follow suit. Brown, and especially Rice, have had countless great moments in the NFL. This isn't one of them.
