Ilya Kovalchuk reportedly has a plan for when he will return to the Devils, but it's not exactly the answer the team wanted to hear.
According to the Russian news outlet Sport-Express, Kovalchuk said yesterday he will fly to New Jersey on Tuesday in order to rejoin his NHL team. The team is expected to open training camp tomorrow. Kovalchuk will participate in this weekend's all-star festivities of the KHL, where he has played during the four-month lockout.
"I have contractual obligations to New Jersey," Kovalchuk said, as translated by Google. "I will carry them out. ... Russian fans deserve to see the [KHL] playoffs, with the participation of all the best Russian players. I gladly would have been one of them, but there are circumstances in which we can not influence."
It's unknown if the Devils have given Kovalchuk permission to stay in his native Russia, as the Red Wings have given their Russian star, Pavel Datsyuk, who will also play in the All-Star game.
