LOWDOWN: Is Princess of Sylmar this year's female version of Smarty Jones? The Pennsylvania-bred filly, trained by Todd Pletcher, crushed maidens by 19 lengths going a mile at Penn National, then came to the Big Apple to step up against allowance foes. Going this distance over this track, Princess of Sylmar rallied to blow right by her heavily favored, uncoupled entrymate Kimono, romping by 5 1/4 lengths.

JEROME

Aqueduct, eighth race. Grade 2. Purse: $200,000. 1 mile 70 yards, 3-year-olds. Post 3:48 p.m.

LOWDOWN: Vyjack was a complete surprise when he won first time out for Rudy Rodriguez at 17-1, then no surprise at all when he stretched out to seven furlongs and won again by 5 3/4 lengths at 1-2 in the slop. The young gelding tries two turns for the first time in New York's first Triple Crown prep of the year and should handle the challenge.

MARSHUA'S RIVER

Gulfstream Park, 10th race. Grade 3. Purse: $100,000. 1 1/16 miles, turf, fillies and mares. Post: 5:05 p.m.

LOWDOWN: Making her third start back off a long layoff, Channel Lady finished full of run to beat a solid field in the Stardusk overnight stakes on turf at Aqueduct on Nov. 21. Should the daughter of turf champion English Channel continue to improve, which seems likely, she can run by them all again down the stretch.

TV: HRTV, NYRA Channel 71.

LAST WEEK: At Gulfstream, Action Andy (7-5) was third in the Mr. Prospector; at Santa Anita, Rising Legend was scratched when the Eddie Logan came off the turf; Capital Account (8-5) was fourth in the Daytona, which was also off the turf.
