Pedro Feliciano rejoins Mets, signs minor-league contract

Apparently Pedro Feliciano is a glutton for punishment.

The left-handed reliever signed a minor-league deal with the Mets yesterday after spending the last two seasons on the Yankees' payroll dealing with an injured left shoulder.

The 36-year-old Feliciano led the majors in appearances in each of his last three years with the Mets — including 92 games in 2010, his final season in Queens.

The staggering workload prompted Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to say Feliciano was "abused" in Flushing after hurting his shoulder shortly after signing a two-year deal with the Yankees worth $8 million in 2011.

FAMILIAR FACE: Pedro Feliciano, who has not pitched in two years, rejoined the Mets on a minor-league deal yesterday. Feliciano signed with the Yankees in 2011, but never pitched in The Bronx because of injuries.

Feliciano never pitched in Yankees pinstripes, as he tore a capsule in his left shoulder and underwent rotator cuff surgery. After advancing to Double-A Trenton last year, a sprained ankle proved to be his final setback.

Even prior to that injury, Feliciano was only throwing in the mid-80s and was not a candidate to be called up.

The reunion with the Mets could be interesting. After Feliciano's shoulder problems began with the Yankees and Cashman said Feliciano's "use pattern was abusive," Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said part of the reason the Mets didn't re-sign Feliciano was because of how heavily his arm had been taxed during his time in Queens.

When told of those comments, Feliciano shot back at the time: "I will show him in the Subway Series when I strike out Ike Davis and when I jump up and down on the mound I'll be like, 'That's for you.' "

Since Feliciano never made it to the Subway Series — or any other series — with the Yankees, that matchup never occurred.

More recently, Feliciano has attempted to prove his health by pitching winter ball for Leones de Ponce in his native Puerto Rico this season. He gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings through seven relief appearances, striking out six and walking one. His deal with the Mets includes an invitation to major league spring training.

* Ben Francisco, a right-handed hitter who both the Mets and Yankees looked at as a potential extra piece in the outfield, agreed to a minor league deal with the Indians yesterday.
