As expected, the Rangers placed Wade Redden on waivers yesterday, paving the way for the team to buy out the final two seasons of the defenseman's six-year, $39 million deal.
If the 35-year-old clears waivers today at noon, the Rangers can exercise an accelerated compliance buyout, which would still pay Redden in full, a pro-rated $3.341 million for this year, including a previous $1 million signing bonus, plus two-thirds of the $5 million due next season.
Redden would then become an unrestricted free agent, but the Rangers' cap charge will not be affected if he plays in the NHL this season. He had spent the past two seasons with the Wolf Pack/Whale after being waived through the NHL each year. — Howie Kussoy
