Correction officers: ‘Someone is going to die’ at Rikers

Written By Unknown on Senin, 09 Maret 2015 | 17.08

Correction officers deposited a coffin in front of City Hall on Sunday to protest assaults against Rikers Island guards.

Some 50 members of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association — including its president Norman Seabrook — blasted the city's jails commissioner for not doing enough to protect rank-and-file workers.

Correction officers in full uniform stood behind the coffin to show what could happen if Correction Commissioner Joe Ponte doesn't address safety concerns in city jails.

"He needs to strengthen the security," said Seabrook. "Someone is going to die at the hands of an inmate . . . because of the inadequate staffing levels."

Later, a protest led by the Long Island-based Square Deal Committee drew at least 200 people to support Peter Liang, the police officer indicted last month for fatally shooting Akai Gurley in an unlit Brooklyn stairwell.
