About the only thing certain about the proposed fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is that it won't take place in Australia.
Mayweather was denied a visa for a planned visit Down Under because of his domestic abuse convictions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. A lucrative tour of Melbourne and Sydney including "gala dinners" costing $200 to $1,000 a plate are in danger of being canceled.
Mayweather, according to the newspaper, originally was scheduled to attend the dinners on Jan. 29 and 30, but the dates were pushed back to Thursday and Friday when the boxer's travel issues arose. Organizers planned to appeal his visa denial in hopes of gaining Mayweather's entry into the country.
Meanwhile, optimism for an agreement on a May 2 fight with Pacquiao seems to be fading with each passing day. Instead of working to reach a deal, various sides seem intent on blaming others for the lack of progress.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had said before the Super Bowl he expected the deal to be done "within the next couple of days." But that window has come and gone. Pacquiao and Mayweather already are drawing up alternative plans should they have to seek another opponent. That's never a good sign.
"We're not standing in the way of this fight," said an insider from HBO who was attending the press conference to announce Wladimir Klitschko's heavyweight title defense against Bryant Jennings at the Garden on April 25. "It's up to the fighters to make a deal."
