College football's regular season is boring by comparison.
Cordell Broadus — the son of hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg — committed to UCLA, where he will join Justin Combs, the son of rap mogul Diddy (also known as Sean Combs), but that wasn't the only highlight to National Signing Day, an entertaining Wednesday full of players flipping commitments, giving odd reasons for their decisions, coaching staffs reacting to the news and a new No. 1.
Saban and Alabama dethroned
First, Alabama loses to Ohio State in the inaugural College Football Playoff and now the Crimson Tide's string of having the nation's top-recruiting class comes to a close at four. It seems like Steve Sarkisian has USC headed back to title-contender status after a huge day. The Trojans snagged three five-star prospects — top-ranked cornerback Iman Marshall, No. 4 defensive end Rasheem Green and No. 2 outside linebacker John Houston — to claim the top spot in Rivals.com's recruiting rankings.
USC's crosstown rival UCLA also made its mark, landing blue-chip quarterback Josh Rosen and five-star running back Soso Jamabo, while Tennessee, looking to get its program back on track, finished a surprising fifth with four five-star signees. Defending champion Ohio State, meanwhile, continued to add to its embarrassment of riches, procuring the ninth-ranked class in the country.
Confusion at the Top
What would signing day be without controversy around the No. 1 player in the country?
Defensive end Byron Cowart announced his commitment to Auburn over Florida on ESPNU, told recruiting reporters he had signed, yet the papers never arrived at the SEC powerhouse.
His coach, Sean Callahan, told Rivals the plan wasn't to send in his National Letter of Intent (NLI) after the television announcement. Cowart also told ESPN he was waiting to send the papers to make sure his "heart is there." Adding to the intrigue, former Florida coach Will Muschamp is now the defensive coordinator at Auburn. By the end of the afternoon, the papers finally arrived, capping the dramatic afternoon.
Fast start for Harbaugh, McElwain
Jim Harbaugh was hired just five weeks ago, leaving him little time to put together a formidable class. And while Michigan's 14-man group was rated 49th overall, Harbaugh did bring in six four-star recruits. New Florida coach Jim McElwain did a fine job rebounding after a slow start to the day, garnering the services of top-rated offensive tackle Martez Ivey and No. 2 defensive end CeCe Jefferson after losing Cowart.
Off-beat commitments
From a de-commitment over Twitter to a commitment in three languages and a coaching staff welcoming recruits with rap songs, Signing Day had its share of high jinx. Then there was the gargantuan addition by BYU of mammoth 6-foot-7, 410-pound signee Motekiai Langi of Liahona High School in Tonga.
Scarlet Letter Day for Rutgers
Kyle Flood landed the ninth-ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten, according to Rivals, highlighted by Florida defensive end Marques Ford — the Scarlet Knights' lone four-star recruit — and Florida defensive back Jarius Adams, who picked Rutgers over Michigan and Wisconsin. The 25-man class has a distinct local flavor with two city stars (Erasmus Hall linebacker Deonte Roberts and Grand Street Campus defensive tackle Kamaal Seymour) and six others from New Jersey.
