Her guardian angel must be a bureaucrat.
A North Salem woman who works in accounting near Grand Central says she decided to stay late to finish some paperwork — so she missed by five minutes the 5:45 p.m. Metro-North train that crashed Tuesday.
"It's a very rare occurrence that I miss it," said Maia Barnett, 27, who said she typically sits in the front car.
A co-worker had handed her the papers at the end of the day, and while the work wasn't pressing, she decided to finish it before leaving.
"I'm still in shock . . . I realize all those things we worry about are meaningless. It's like standing on the edge of a cliff and looking down," Barnett said. She's devastated that some of the people with whom she commutes daily may no longer be alive.
"Why me? Why not someone else? I've seen them every day for years," she said. "They've held doors for me to make sure I didn't miss my stop. I wonder with a mixture of fear and dread whose faces I won't see."
Barnett says she's now asking: "What will I do with the time that I've been given?"
