Kate Pierson still rocks, even without the B52s (but now with Sia)

Kate Pierson released her first album with the B-52s in 1979. And yet the 66-year-old vocalist is not so experienced that she can't still learn from today's bright lights, as demonstrated by her new collaboration with singer/songwriter Sia.

"She really taught me how to zone in on the melody first," says Pierson, whose first solo album, "Guitars and Microphones," drops on Tuesday, and was executive-produced by the "Chandelier" singer. "I'd usually start with a title and lyrics."

I kicked my old songs to the curb and we started completely new. - Kate Pierson

Pierson sounds in full voice all these years on, perhaps a tad growlier, but as strong and, when needed, dreamy as in her B-52s days.

The album's songs have a sharp pop punch, not unlike her band, but the absence of Fred Schneider opens the field for Pierson to turn the quirk of the B-52s into a brash but heartfelt sincerity. She and her longtime partner, Monica Coleman, became friends with Sia around four years ago, when they were introduced by mutual friends in the band Betty, and later wound up vacationing together in Mexico. Pierson had started a solo project a decade ago, only to have it derailed by a busy schedule that included a surprise hit in Japan from her band NiNa and the recording of the B-52s 2008 album, "Funplex." So Coleman asked Sia if she could help Pierson get a new attempt off the ground.

"I kicked my old songs to the curb," says Pierson, "and we started completely new."

Soon after, Sia called Pierson with a song.

"She said, 'I've written this song I was writing for myself, but I realized it's for you.' It's called 'Bring Your Arms.' It's about a sea turtle rescue we witnessed in Tulum, Mexico. It was so perfect for me — it was exactly what I would want to have written."

Sia wound up writing several more songs for the album, which also sees contributions from producer Dallas Austin and the Strokes' Nick Valensi.

Pierson — who lives in Woodstock and runs two boutique hotels, one there and one in California, with Coleman — will play City Winery on Feb. 25, after which she hopes to embark on a larger tour. While she plays only occasional dates with the B-52s, Pierson has clearly lost none of her passion for creating, growing and performing for fans.

"I think if I had many more lives," she says, "I would [still] never learn enough about music."
