Nixon the drunk, Jefferson the glutton and 4 more party-hardy presidents

"Presidents are human beings," author Brian Abrams tells The Post. "They behave in ways we can relate to."

True. Who among us isn't in the habit of starting every morning with a mug of hard cider, like John Adams? Or casually showing off our genitalia to colleagues, like Lyndon Johnson?

As is plain in Abrams' book "Party Like a President: True Tales of Inebriation, Lechery, and Mischief from the Oval Office," released this month, being elected commander in chief doesn't make someone above boorish behavior. Not that it necessarily affected job performance.

"You can't make this empirical judgment call about whether those who partied performed better than those who didn't," says Abrams, who lives in Brooklyn. "You can think of instances where people were total teetotalers and didn't have much of a reach. Someone like LBJ, whose scotch-drinking was almost robotic, is considered a master legislator."

He are six randy anecdotes to celebrate President's Day:

Thousands on food!

Our third prez was a foodie before being a foodie was cool. One servant recalled that Jefferson would never eat fewer than eight courses, even when dining alone. He spent the equivalent in today's dollars of nearly $1,000 a day on food, and amassed a monumental wine collection, dropping more than $300,000 on vino during his two terms.

Pills & liquor!

Tricky Dick drank martinis and scotch in moderation, but the effect may have been boosted by the sleeping and antipsychotic pills found in his Oval Office drawer. "One beer would transform his speech into the rambling elocution of a Bowery wino," aide H.R. Haldeman says in 2012's "Nixon's Darkest Secrets" by Don Fulsom. A Secret Service agent reported once hearing an intoxicated Nixon shouting into a phone, "Bomb the s - - t out of them!"

Booze!

James Buchanan, 1857-1861

The Pennsylvanian might well have been our heartiest president. He and a guest could down two to three bottles of whiskey, plus copious amounts of wine, at a single sitting and Buchanan showed "no headache, no faltering steps," reported a journalist. At his Pennsylvania house, Buchanan would purchase a 10-gallon cask of whiskey every week.

Poppers!

According to "Party Like a President," JFK holds one special distinction: He's our only head of state known to use "poppers," inhaled amyl nitrate that causes a head rush and increases sexual pleasure. Kennedy supposedly offered a dose to two young female interns, nicknamed Fiddle and Faddle by him, while partying at the
White House.

Shots!

Andrew Johnson, 1865-1869

"The Grim Presence," as he was known, wasn't averse to a tipple. At his 1865 vice-presidential inauguration, an apparently blotto Johnson demanded whiskey from former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin. Johnson knocked back three shots, then grabbed the Bible from the chief justice and kissed it. He also forgot the names of his cabinet and was heard whispering, "Who is the secretary of the Navy?"

Hookers!

Warren Harding, 1921-1923

The randy Republican had multiple mistresses and contracted a case of gonorrhea from a prostitute. He wrote long love letters to one of his playthings, revealing that he had a strange nickname for his penis. "Jerry is standing up beside me while I write you," he penned.
