Fisher: Work ethic not reason why Hardaway is struggling

LONDON — After Tuesday's practice at Imperial College, Tim Hardaway Jr. made a promotional appearance for adidas. That looks to be the only place he is gaining traction.

As the Knicks carry a 15-game losing streak into this showcase game Thursday against the Bucks, Hardaway's sophomore season is going into the "loo,'' with his long-range shot and defense in sharp decline.

In the four games since the fire sale during which the Knicks' other two shooting guards — Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith — were dumped, Hardaway is shooting just 4-of-24 from 3-point range. In his last game Saturday against the Hornets, he was benched by coach Derek Fisher 37 seconds into the second half after a defensive lapse.

"I just try to encourage Tim to continue to build consistent habits, a consistent approach, a consistent mindset,'' Fisher said. "Tim is a second-year player, he's not going to have all of what you need to be consistently successful at this point, but he's doing well.

He's having a rough patch right now but he works hard every day. He's the first one in the building most afternoons.''

Some believe Fisher and his staff are too hard on Hardaway and he has become the scapegoat for a lot of defensive breakdowns. Hardaway clearly is regressing under the new coaching staff after excelling under Mike Woodson's group as a First Team All-Rookie sensation. His body language has been poor.

Hardaway may miss former shooting coach Dave Hopla the most. Hopla was fired along with the rest of Woodson's staff by Phil Jackson. Hardaway, shooting 38.6 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from 3-point range, has not made himself available to the media since last Wednesday.

Fisher said Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, both dealing with sore knees, could be under minutes restrictions the rest of the way as the club hits the season's midpoint.

The Knicks didn't land in London until 9:30 a.m. local time Tuesday after flying through the night. As a result, Fisher staged a practice in South Kensington because he wanted the players to conduct have a normal day.

"Guys are pretty confused on which day it is,'' Fisher said.

Some Knicks went to the West Ham-Everton soccer match.

As part of the London festivities, Anthony will join Prince Harry and former Knicks property John Amaechi (never played a game) at the Royal Foundation's Coach Core graduation ceremony Wednesday. Coach Core is an apprenticeship program training the next generation of sports coaches and mentors.

Fisher said newcomer Lance Thomas is getting a course overload of the triangle offense the past few days and should be ready to make his Knicks debut. Thomas, because of injuries, started for the Thunder at beginning of the season.

"I didn't talk to the OKC staff directly," Fisher said, "but I've heard enough from other folks and what I observed, the way he carries himself and how he plays the game that once he was coming to join our team, I was excited about it.

"Even if he's not here for a long time, if management decides, you can't have too many guys who are pros and carry themselves like he does.''

The Bucks also practiced at Imperial then took a tour of the famous Chelsea soccer facility. … The NBA said the game at O2 Arena sold out online in less than an hour.
