ARLINGTON, Texas — Amid the excitement of Ohio State's national championship victory Monday night, Cardale Jones said he would consider making the jump to the NFL after just three starts at the college level.
A day later, however, the big-armed redshirt sophomore seemed like he had a change of heart.
"I'm going to be starting three games in three years, and you know, guys play their whole career to have that buildup and have that motivation to play in the NFL. In my personal opinion, I'm not ready for that level yet," he said Tuesday morning, hours after leading the Buckeyes to a 42-20 win over Oregon at AT&T Stadium. "I mean, like coach [Urban] Meyer said, it's a conversation me and him will have later down the road.
"But, to me, right now, it's far out."
Jones began the year as the Buckeyes' third-string quarterback, before being pressed into duty. He won all three of his starts, throwing for 860 yards and seven touchdowns in wins over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon. He could go back to the bench next year, though, with Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett — the two players who were ahead of him on the depth chart — saying they plan to return.
If Jones did declare for the draft — and the cutoff date is Thursday — FOX Sports and NFL Network analyst Charles Davis believes there is a chance he would be the third quarterback selected, behind Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston.
"It actually screams don't do it [because of his lack of experience], but it's such a quarterback-needy league, with the performance he has put on and teams he has beaten along the way, you might say, 'Let's take a shot,' " Davis said. "I think people [would] take a look."
