Potential veteran competition for Geno Smith is now on the market after the Buccaneers released quarterback Josh McCown on Wednesday.
McCown, 35, certainly is no stranger to the Jets. The 12-year pro was scheduled to visit the Jets last offseason before canceling at the last minute to sign with Tampa Bay.
McCown was cut after a dreadful, injury-plagued season with the Buccaneers in which he went 1-10 in 11 starts while completing just 56 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Tampa Bay is expected to take a quarterback — either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota — with the No. 1 overall pick.
McCown was anointed the starter over Mike Glennon last summer but was unable to repeat his success of the previous year with the Bears, when he went 3-2 in place of Jay Cutler with 13 touchdown passes and just one interception.
McCown could be an attractive depth target again for the Jets, though it remains to be seen if the new regime of Todd Bowles and general manager Todd Maccagnan are as high on him as Rex Ryan and John Idzik.
