One reason Carmelo won’t sit on bench during Knicks games

Carmelo Anthony has shown up at the Garden for the last three weeks to rehab before games in the trainer's room. He goes on the court briefly for light stretching and to talk to teammates before retiring to the locker room to mingle some more. But he still hasn't sat on the Knicks bench as rehabbing Kobe Bryant has for Lakers games.

Coach Derek Fisher said he wasn't sure of the reasons, but a Knicks official later said it was due to the fear of a hustling player crashing into the bench where Anthony might be sitting. Anthony's surgery took place six weeks ago. It's unclear if he will be on the bench by the time the season ends April 15.

"He's enjoying being around the group,'' Fisher said. "Guys are happy to see him moving around again. After being holed up in a place for a few weeks, the interaction has been good, talking about things he's seeing and observations and continuing to encourage guys to take advantage of the opportunity.''

Anthony leaves the arena before tipoff. He hasn't spoken to the media since deciding to undergo surgery on what The Post has reported as a partially torn patellar tendon. Phil Jackson believes Anthony will be doing work on the court by June.

Asked whether Anthony choose not to sit on the bench for safety issues, Fisher said he didn't know. "You can ask him that if you ever get a chance to talk to him or the medical staff,'' Fisher said. "There's been no discussion whether Carmelo would be sitting on the bench when he's recovering from a major knee surgery.''

Rookie Cleanthony Early scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter to spearhead the Knicks rally from a 14-point deficit, but got blocked on a runner with 21 seconds left and the score tied.

Early had said before the game he wanted to "mess'' with the Nets' playoff bid. "I think we all wanted to win,'' Early said.

Ricky Ledo, in his first game after signing a second 10-day contract, scored 11 points and had four assists in a fine first half before cooling off. He was 1-of-5 in the second half and finished with 13 points, four assists, six rebounds and three turnovers.

Perhaps some ominous words from 2016 free agent Kevin Durant. The Knicks believe they have a chance at Durant with Fisher being his former teammate, Knicks assistant coach Brian Keefe being close to him and Durant being buddies with Anthony.

Durant is out for the year after foot surgery, but told a video company about re-signing with the Thunder: "I love it here. I love my teammates, I love the city, I don't really think about anywhere else. … For me, I love staying in the moment, and I'm one of those guys that would love to stick it out with one team my whole career.

"Kobe/Tim Duncan/Dirk Nowitzki type of dude. That's awesome. But you never know what the future holds sometimes and how teams may feel about you after a while. But I love it here, and I would love to get my jersey retired here."
