Collins has two backup plans if Murphy’s a no-go on Opening Day

PORT ST. LUCIE — Daniel Murphy still remains in contention for Opening Day, but the Mets have a backup plan.

"We've certainly got to keep an open mind," manager Terry Collins said Wednesday, after Murphy played five innings at second base in a minor-league exhibition game.

Murphy, recovering from a pulled right hamstring, won't accompany the club to Texas this weekend for the Mets' final two exhibition games, but still could be in the lineup Monday in Washington to start the regular season.

The backup plan, according to Collins, is letting Matt Reynolds handle second base full-time until Murphy returns or using Ruben Tejada and Danny Muno in a platoon.

A disabled list stint for Murphy could be backdated, allowing him to play on April 12 in Atlanta if he isn't ready for the Opening Day roster.

"I like the way I am progressing," Murphy said. "Every day I have been pleasantly surprised at how good I have felt."

Collins said he is more concerned about the condition of Murphy's legs than the number of at-bats he has received.

"It's the daily grind of stuff," Collins said. "We're hoping the next couple of days he gets a little extra work in and we look up this weekend and he joins us."

As expected, Dillon Gee has claimed the final spot in the Mets rotation, according to a source, but Collins hasn't made it official yet. Rafael Montero made a late charge at the job, but will begin the season in the bullpen.

Vic Black pitched an inning in a minor-league exhibition game and said there were no problems with his right shoulder. The righty reliever expects to pitch again Saturday and be in position to join the Mets on April 12.

Bobby Parnell allowed a three-run homer in one inning of work in a minor-league exhibition game, but said he was pleased with the process. The right-hander peaked at 94 mph.

"The results aren't reflections on how hard we're working," Parnell said. "Every outing that I have gone out, [the velocity] has gotten better."

Parnell likely will begin the season in extended spring training, and the Mets are hopeful he can join the team by May 1 if not earlier.

Alex Torres, who was acquired in a deal with the Padres on Tuesday, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Mets.
