Man says he’s the first to legally live in trailer in New York City

A quirky Brooklyn mechanic claims he's the first person to legally make a trailer his permanent home in New York City — but he had to move from a lot to the street after a land owner called him a squatter on wheels.

The man, who goes by "JR," set up his weathered yellow trailer on an empty Bushwick lot that he told The Post he leases.

The 15-foot home on Bushwick Avenue near Montieth Street is hooked to a generator, two doors is roughly the size of a studio apartment.

"Rent is crazy in the neighborhood. I rented the land for five months for five hundred dollars a month," said JR, who added that he set up the deal roughly two weeks ago.

"I actually have a lease and I'm allowed to be there," he insisted.

When workers from Joseph Real Estate knocked on his door Friday, he presented a signed lease to prove his camper set up was legit, according to Joseph Zelik, who owns the property at 467 Bushwick Ave.

But Zelik, 66, says the lease is a sham — signed by a mystery man.

"Someone broke the lock on my fence. He [JR] moved in without my permission. It's like Occupy Wall Street moved to Bushwick," Zelik fumed.

Zelik added, "He was really belligerent and nasty."

"Maybe someone scammed him, it's possible. But I had no choice but to call the cops," Zelik said.

By Saturday, JR had rolled the trailer, which has New Jersey license plates, out of the lot and onto the street next to it — which is legal for up 24 hours, according to the city Department of Transportation.

Other city officials said there's nothing wrong with mobile housing.

"It's not considered an abandoned vehicle if it has plates on it. If a vehicle is left without plates for 72 hours, then we start our process — tag the vehicle, etc.," said Department of Sanitation spokesman Keith Mellis.

The Post could find no past media reports of a person renting land and living legally and long term in a trailer in the city.

JR stopped talking to The Post last week, barking, "Do yourself a favor and stay away from my trailer!"

Police sources didn't return requests for comment.

It's unclear if JR will stay in the area for good.

"Who knows," Zelik said. "By now, he may have found another spot."
