Why Magic credits David Stern for his ‘No. 1 All-Star moment’

There have been moments at All-Star events that forever will be etched in the mind, like Michael Jordan's gravity defying dunk in 1988 or the 50 greatest players being introduced in 1997.

But none of them impacted history like the 1992 game.

In November 1991, Magic Johnson stunned the world when he announced his retirement after testing positive for the HIV virus. But four months later, Johnson came out of retirement and started, played and won the MVP Award at the 1992 All-Star Game in Orlando.

"The No. 1 All-Star moment for me, Orlando without a doubt," Johnson said Saturday, praising then-Commissioner David Stern for allowing it to happen. "I owe him a lot for allowing me to play. We both changed the face of the disease, changed the way people look at people living with HIV. It was almost history-making.

"Just like Larry [Bird] and I will be linked forever, Commissioner Stern and I will be linked forever about changing the world when it comes to HIV and AIDS," Johnson said. "That was my greatest moment. To prove to people you could play against me and nothing was going to happen."

Johnson scored 25 points and passed for nine assists in the West's 153-113 win and hit a 3-pointer late over friend Isiah Thomas that was his signature moment.

"That I could still play the game and prove to myself that I was going to be OK, that was important too. It was great therapy for me," Johnson said. "And I owe Tim Hardaway because he allowed me to start in his place. The NBA family really came to my aid, to my side, really supported me. All of the players. It was just tremendous."
