Somebody stole Stephen Curry's lime-green shoes, but nothing could take away his golden shooting touch. The Warriors guard dominated arguably the deepest field ever put together for the NBA 3-Point Contest, turning Barclays Center into his own personal shooting clinic.
Curry won his first 3-point title with 27 points in the final, beating Kyrie Irving (17) and Warriors "Splash Brothers" teammate Klay Thompson (14) in a rare shootout that actually upstaged the Slam Dunk Contest. Curry got it done despite having two pairs of Under Armour shoes he planned to wear swiped beforehand.
"I heard about it, but it is what it is," Curry said. "It's shoes."
Curry's shoes apparently were signed for when they got to Brooklyn on Friday, but went missing before making it to Barclays Center, as first reported by the blog, Nice Kicks. Curry wore the "Candy Reign" colorway, inspired by his love of Sour Patch Kids, for the contest. (He and his father, former NBA star Dell, wore a colorway that matched the Hornets' colors in the Shooting Stars competition.)
But none of that slowed down the younger Curry, who rolled to a win he dedicated to a late fan. On Saturday morning, Curry said he would write the name of Deah Shaddy Barakat on his shoes. Barakat, a Curry fan, was one victim of a triple homicide this week in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Curry blistered a loaded field. Defending champ Marco Belinelli of the Spurs, Portland's Wesley Matthews, Houston's James Harden, the Clippers' dead-eye J.J. Redick and even Atlanta's Kyle Korver all got knocked out early. Matthews, tied for the NBA lead in treys this season, had 22 points, and Korver is in the midst of the greatest shooting season in NBA history, hitting 51.6 percent from deep. But neither made the finals.
Irving, a West Orange, N.J., native and defending champ, went first and finished with 17. Curry went next with his 27, and Thompson couldn't answer.
"I'm very happy right now. I've obviously been in it four times, so I wanted to win it and get it done,'' Curry said. "Thankfully I got it tonight, and was able to accomplish that.''
