Exec who fired Steve Jobs praises him for ‘connecting the dots’

What would Steve Jobs do if he were still alive and well at Apple?

Aspiring tech tycoons might better ask: What would Steve Jobs do if he were still alive and someplace else?

That's the advice from John Sculley, the legendary Pepsi exec who famously fired Jobs from Apple — only to be ousted himself a decade later after increasing the company's revenues tenfold.

Sculley — whose new book "Moonshot" is aimed at the latest generation of would-be Silicon Valley gods — doesn't harbor any grudges for the late, notoriously prickly Jobs.

That's despite famously clashing with the tech icon over the direction of Apple in the mid-1980s — a battle dramatized in the 2013 biopic "Jobs," in which Matthew Modine starred as Sculley opposite Ashton Kutcher in the title role.

"Steve was not an engineer — he just saw different things that people were working on and connected the dots between them," Sculley said, citing as an example Jobs's vision to give number-crunching personal computers the ability to do calligraphic fonts.

"That's the whole direction of the future of technology, and that was something no one was working on at the time," Sculley said.

Today, the key "dots" that have become available to the Young Turks of Silicon Valley include cloud computing, wireless sensors, mobile devices and Big Data, according to Sculley.

"If you're able to give customers an extraordinary product or service that's so much better than anything else that's been available previously, then use the same tech to dramatically reduce the cost of delivering these services, you're going to see multibillion-dollar businesses as a result," Sculley says.

E-commerce giant Amazon, the ride-hailing app Uber and short-term home-rental site Airbnb are good examples of blockbuster outfits that connected these dots despite early skepticism, Sculley says.
