FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Nate Solder was asked if he remembered the last time he caught a touchdown pass.
"Nope," Solder said after Patriots 45, Colts 7 in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium, and laughed. "It's been that long, I don't remember. I think it was high school."
Indeed it was.
Solder answered the question following another piece of Belichicanery resulted in the Patriots left tackle, an eligible receiver on this occasion, catching a screen pass from Tom Brady and rumbling into the end zone to break the game open in the third quarter.
"Nate made a great catch," Brady said. "Tough conditions out there — it's raining, I mean, for God's sake, and he runs over two guys to get in there. He played a little tight end in his first year [at Colorado]. So I don't know, maybe we have more tricks up our sleeve."
Solder's thoughts when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called the play?
"I thought it was a good call," Solder said.
Any nerves?
"I was ready for it, I was ready for it," Solder said.
"I don't necessarily want or not want to do something like that. If they call it I'm happy, but if they don't call it I'm happy too."
It was all a blur to him. "I kinda blacked out, and when I woke up, the O-Line was jumping on top of me," Solder said.
Asked how he would describe his route, Solder said, laughing: "Just proficient. Made it across the goal line."
His teammates were confident that Solder would come through.
"We know he's got good hands. We had no doubt he was going to catch the ball," LeGarrette Blount said.
"We knew if that play got called it was going to be a touchdown," fellow offensive lineman Cameron Fleming said.
"Didn't want to fumble the ball, that was it," Solder said.
The best part of it for Solder, who planned on keeping the ball, was his linemates pouring all over him to celebrate in the end zone.
"Those are my guys, those are my guys," Solder said. "To be around them, the excitement that they shared with me — it was like we all did it, it was so fun."
