Prosecutors call for ‘mystery informant’ in Etan Patz case

Manhattan prosecutors announced Monday that they plan to call a last-minute witness against the man charged in the 1979 kidnap and murder of 6-year-old Etan Patz.

"We have informed the defense team that we have an informant who will be testifying against the defendant," Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon told a judge.

She didn't offer additional details about the mystery informant's testimony or identity.

Jury selection is under way in the trial of Pedro Hernandez, 53, a mentally troubled former bodega worker.

In a 2012 videotaped confession, he chillingly describes using a soda to lure the boy into a Soho deli basement, strangling him and disposing of his body.

Similar admissions to friends and family in the decades since the crime are the bulk of the prosecution case against Hernandez.

His lawyers claim his confessions were inconsistent, coerced and false.

"If the People are introducing the fact that my client made the statement that he had something to do with Etan Patz's disappearance, he said that to many people at various times including on a videotape so, therefore, it's not a surprising thing he'd say things like that," said attorney Harvey Fishbein.

Etan disappeared on his way to school on May 25, 1979, and became the first missing child to appear on a milk carton. His body was never recovered.
