Packers’ Mike McCarthy response to legions of second-guessers

SEATTLE — Mike McCarthy wouldn't hang his head. He wouldn't speak in defeated tones. He would leave it for others to second-guess the way he and the Packers allowed this NFC Championship Game to get away — and there will be plenty of second-guessing.

McCarthy wouldn't add to the noise. Even after a 28-22 loss that will echo for years in Green Bay, he walked away from the season defiantly.

"I have no regrets," McCarthy said. "I don't regret anything. Hell, I expected to win the game. We were positioned to win the game. But that's football. I'm very proud of the way our team played, the way they prepared and fully expected to win the game today. And, hey, we had our chance."

The Packers also had a 19-7 lead as late as 2 minutes and 9 seconds to go in the game, and it was a lead that could have been much larger. Twice in the first quarter the Packers were in the shadow of the Seahawks goal line; twice McCarthy opted to go for field goals.

"We knew points were at a premium," he said. "Frankly, I would have liked to have gone for it there on fourth down based on what we saw on second and third down, but I just felt you had to take the points."

Later, in what felt like an endless slog of a fourth quarter, the Packers clearly opted to go conservative, keeping the ball on the ground, playing like a team that believed it had an impenetrable lead.

"I'm not questioning it," McCarthy said. "I came in here to run the ball."

The key play was the onside kick after Seattle had made it 19-14, when Brandon Bostick leapt for the ball rather than blocking as was his assignment: "It's important for everyone to do their job, and unfortunately that wasn't the case on that play."

"That was a huge play," McCarthy said. "A huge momentum swing, critical. You get the football there and we're having a different press conference."

McCarthy's quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, was clearly hobbled by his calf injury and admitted, "Yeah, I felt it the whole game."

"It was OK. In the fourth quarter I kind of let it go," Rodgers said. "We needed to push it there and run a little bit and I just kind of let it go."
