Why Jason Smith’s return to New Orleans was so emotional

Knicks power forward Jason Smith got together with Ryan Anderson, his former New Orleans teammate. It was an emotional reunion and an emotional return here for Smith.

One month ago, Sports Illustrated published a long feature on Anderson and the suicide of his girlfriend, Gia Allemand, who starred in "The Bachelor" and "Bachelor Pad." She killed herself after a fight with Anderson one month before training camp opened last season.

Smith was a central part of the story, rushing to Anderson's house that night to console him and being part of his recovery from the tragedy. Smith was depicted as his best friend on the Pelicans.

Anderson, a power forward, has become an advocate for suicide awareness.

"I still have not read [the article],'' Smith said before the Knicks' 104-93 loss to the Pelicans Tuesday night. "It's still very fresh in my mind. I told him that [Monday] night. He was surprised. Some day down the line I'll read it. But I'm glad they did very good job of writing it from what I heard. Ryan was very happy about it. I think it helped him in the process of getting closure.''

Smith said he is not surprised Anderson has become an ardent spokesman on the subject.

"He's been that way from Day 1,'' Smith said. "Give him something to do, he'll run with it. He can't sit still. To him focus his energy on something like that, it's great. He's a very good person at heart.''

Smith signed with the Knicks as a free agent last summer, leaving the Pelicans after a four-year stint. He watched up close the maturation of center Anthony Davis, who appeared on the SI cover last week.

"He's a tremendous player,'' Smith said. "He'll be a star in this league for many years to come.

"He plays defense, offense, is tremendously long, athletic and he's only 21. We saw it at the beginning — a very tenacious person who soaked up any information from coaches and players and translated it to the court.''

Fisher confirmed Jackson reviews every game with him the next morning.
"It's great to have another perspective, especially from a man who was in our position before, running the same system,'' Fisher said.

"Things we may not see in the moment happens a lot. Some things you don't see when you're sitting right there. It's great to have that information as I and coaches digest how we want to do some things in practice the next day.

Amar'e Stoudemire started at center for Samuel Dalembert for the third time in three games.

Fisher said rebounding is the Knicks' "next big jump'' in improvement. Fisher believes their bigs are rebounding well enough, but need help from the "perimeter players.'' Fisher was likely referring to Tim Hardaway Jr. and J.R. Smith.
