Lionel Hollins’ reeling Nets limping way to Chicago

When it rains … the Nets get socked with a bunch of medical issues.

And so they departed in Tuesday's miserable weather for Chicago without two starters, Brook Lopez (back) and Joe Johnson (flu). Another player, Mirza Teletovic (right hip flexor), was questionable for Wednesday's game with the Bulls.

"You've just got to step in and try to give everything you can, try to improve and build confidence the best way you can until they get back because once they get back, we should be uplifted and get stronger with them," said Alan Anderson, who made his first start of the season replacing Johnson Monday and who will start again against the Bulls.

"Right now, we're just trying to maintain, trying to get better and trying to not [have] drop-offs."

The Bulls are dealing with their own medical woes. Center Joakim Noah (ankle) and forward Doug McDermott (knee) are out, while forward Taj Gibson (ankle) was listed as probable.

Nets coach Lionel Hollins, who started Teletovic for Lopez (with Kevin Garnett sliding to center) in Monday's 110-88 loss to the Cavaliers, was noncommittal on his plan for Chicago.

"I haven't decided who I'm going to put in that spot yet," Hollins said.

With injuries a fact of NBA life, Hollins seemed about as moved as he was by the presence of royalty Monday.

"It is what it is. We're going to be short-handed," he said. "There's nothing else I can say about it. You got to just go play with the guys who are here and not worry about who's not here."

Andrei Kirilenko (personal reasons) remains out.

The Nets actually have been very fortunate on the injury front this season. Through 19 games, they have missed five manpower games through injury/illness. For the same period last season, the number was 45. All last season, they lost 181 manpower games.

The involved Nets had not decided if they would wear "I Can't Breathe" T-shirts during warmups Wednesday as they did Monday — along with some Cavs, including LeBron James. The Nets who wore them were Deron Williams, Jarrett Jack, Kevin Garnett and Anderson.

"We haven't thought about it," Williams said after practice. "I don't know what more can be done than has already been done. The verdict's been handed down. You can bring light to it. It's still relevant."

Hollins was asked if he were involved in protests during his playing career.

"I was a protest on the court," he said. "I got my T's [technical fouls] when I was young that I should have but I was always protesting something. When I played there wasn't nothing really going on. Vietnam War was winding down early in my career. But nothing that really stands out in my mind except for apartheid, was very strong in the middle and later part of my career but not really."

And there was just as much protest, if not more, when Hollins played.

"We had a lot more militant guys and more radical guys who spoke out back then. The only difference is that when you spoke out back then, they might cut you or they may blackball you out of the league but guys still felt the need to speak up."
