Japan's SoftBank agreed Thursday to invest $250 million in Legendary Entertainment, the producer of such blockbusters as "The Dark Knight," "Godzilla," "The Hangover" series and "Inception."
The Internet and technology conglomerate, which shut down deal talks with DreamWorks Animation days ago, will also form a joint venture with Legendary to exploit the latter's intellectual property rights in China and India.
"Legendary is already a content powerhouse, and we are very excited to make this investment and help them bring their incredibly successful film franchises and other exciting new media content to an even larger global audience," said Nikesh Arora, the CEO of SoftBank Internet and Media (SIM).
Arora will join Legendary's board following the investment. He stepped down as Google's chief business officer last summer to join SoftBank.
He more recently took the CEO spot at newly formed SIM, where sources report he's spearheading SoftBank's search for content properties.
"One thing's for sure — they didn't come over here just to do that one deal," said Steven Azarbad, the chief investment officer at New York-based Maglan Capital, which owns about 1 percent of MGM.
"Lionsgate and MGM are the most likely targets, provided they don't circle back to [DWA chief] Jeffrey Katzenberg."
