Argentina president says US might plot to kill her

Just days after the US government found Argentina in contempt of court, its president, Cristina Kirchner, appears to be losing it.

Kirchner said the US might plot to kill her, suspended the local bank that was helping its citizens get dollars and blamed it on head of the central bank, who promptly resigned — the fourth one in five years.

The departure of Central Bank President Juan Carlos Fábrega was the last straw for the troubled country, as Argentina's stock index (Merval) fell 16 percent on Wednesday and Thursday.

Fábrega earlier this summer put together a group of local banks to try to buy claims owned by billionaire Paul Singer and others to avert a default, but the effort was unsuccessful.

"The one guy the market trusted is gone," said Ben Heller, emerging market guru at hedge fund Hutchin Hill.
