This could be the best season of ‘Big Brother’ yet

There are only five contestants left on "Big Brother" going into its Wednesday-night episode — and show host Julie Chen says these "gamers" are some of the best she's seen in the show's 16-season history.

"I think this has been the most intriguing game-playing ever," says Chen. "[The players] know themselves and know the game and have their eyes on the prize — they're not afraid of hurting any feelings or getting their feelings hurt." As of Wednesday, only Frankie Grande (Ariana Grande's brother), Cody Calafiore, Derrick Levvaseur, New Yorker Victoria Rafaeli and Caleb Reynolds (aka "Beast Mode Cowboy") remain in the game. Chen says the remaining house guests "are less emotional and more clever" than in seasons past.

"Last year we had all the drama with racism and the 'mean girls,' but there aren't really any cliques this season," she says. "It's game-playing at its best; these gamers know the game and they know themselves and they're not letting their emotions get in the way of making smart decisions."

The 90-minute "Big Brother" finale airs Wednesday, Sept. 24 on CBS (9:30 p.m.).

It's the numbers game

Ratings: "The Meredith Vieira Show" premiered to solid numbers Monday — up 41 percent (in overnights) over last season's timeslot averages. But, here in New York, "Meredith" finished third at 2 p.m. with a 1.5 household rating on Ch. 4 — behind Ch. 7's combo of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (with new host Terry Crews) and "Jeopardy!" (2.5) and "The Talk" on Ch. 2 (1.8). But, as we know, one day does not a success or failure make (for any show).

David Muir's first week in the "World News Tonight" anchor chair, meanwhile, led the ABC newscast to a win in the coveted adults 25-54 demo last week, beating the "NBC Nightly News" (Brian Williams) by 73,000 viewers. "Nightly News," however, won the week in total viewers (8.5 million).

Some funny business

Comedian Richard Lewis will be at Carolines on Broadway this weekend (Friday and Saturday nights) and will be signing copies of his new DVD set, "Bundle of Nerves," Saturday at 1 p.m. at Barnes & Noble (2289 Broadway). Lewis will be seen in the movie "She's Funny that Way" early next year. It's from Peter Bogdanovich and co-stars Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and Cybill Shepherd.

More comedy: The Andy Kaufman Award, named in honor of the late comedian, is accepting submissions for its tenth year through Sept. 15 (andykaufmanaward.com has info). Popular stand-up comedian Reggie Watts, and actress Kristen Schaal ("Flight of the Conchords," "The Daily Show") are both onetime Andy Kaufman Award winners — Schaal in 2005 and Watts in 2006.
