Husband to sue hospital after wife and twins die during birth

A Staten Island man says his common-law wife died giving birth to their twin girls — who also died — because doctors at Richmond University Hospital tried to deliver the premature babies vaginally even though she told them she needed to deliver via C-section.

Victoria Rexach, 30, and the twin girls, whom she planned to name Chali and Chassidy, all died during the tragic delivery on Aug. 28, 2014, her family said Tuesday. She was 5¹/₂ months pregnant.

"She told the doctors she needed to have a C-section because she was high-risk and they knew that. She told them she couldn't push but they made her push and they let her die," said city activist Awilda Cordero, who is working with the family.

"I was expecting to see her back home in a few days. Now I'm going through the worst pain of my life. It's like a nightmare," said Rexach's common-law husband Tafari Brathwaite, who said he plans to sue the hospital.

The city medical examiner is investigating the home-health-care aide's death, a spokeswoman said.

"The hospital and our staff who provided care to the patient worked diligently and heroically to save the life of this young woman, who had a very complex obstetrical history," the hospital said in a statement.
