Cuomo gives in to debating Astorino

Gov. Cuomo will do something before November's general election that he refused to do leading up to the Democratic primary — debate.

"I believe we'll have debates. The campaigns have to work them out, but I believe we'll have debates," Cuomo said Thursday of his planned face-off with his Republican opponent, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

Cuomo was roundly criticized for refusing to discuss the issues with Democratic rival Zephyr Teachout, who captured more than a third of the vote while carrying 30 of the state's 62 counties in Tuesday's primary.

Days before that election, Cuomo argued it doesn't always make sense to debate.

"It depends on the campaign. It depends on the issues," he said. "I've been in many debates that I think were a disservice to democracy."

The reference was apparently to a 2010 debate in which Cuomo faced off against former madam Kirsten Davis and Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is Too Damn High Party.

Astorino is calling on the governor to agree to up to eight debates before the Nov. 4 vote.

But Cuomo, the heavy favorite, will likely agree to no more than two. And it's unclear whether minor-party candidates will be included, as they were four years ago.

Astorino wants to go one-on-one against Cuomo.

"There are two people now who can win — me or Andrew Cuomo. And that's who the public should be listening to — a substantive debate on the issues and not a circus," Astorino said.
