Struggling Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. has asked top bosses to give back their bonuses — but the heads of Sony's entertainment assets weren't among them, The Post has learned.
Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai, dealing with an expected annual loss of $489 million, suggested this week that all corporate chiefs and those at the electronics division give back as much as $9.8 million in bonuses.
Hirai also suggested deep pay cuts for Sony brass.
For the 12 months ended March 31, Sony lost a staggering $1.2 billion.
Since then, the once mighty Sony has announced payroll cuts amounting to 5,000 jobs, the sale of its PC business and the walling off of its troubled TV set business into a stand-alone unit.
The heads of Sony's movie, TV and music segments escaped a request for some corporate charity, one source said.
The firm hired management consultants Bain last November to cut $100 million from its US entertainment operations.
Hirai is falling on his own sword for the continued problems that have pushed the shares south for two days since the profit warning on Wednesday.
With a March 31 end to its fiscal year, decisions are made now about who gets what sized bonus checks this month.
It's highly unusual for a corporation to ask employees to return checks that may have already been issued, the source added.
Some 40 senior Sony executives were asked to give back money.
The firm is expected to conduct a strategy session on May 22.
