* Camila Giorgi was born in Italy, more than 4,000 miles from New York. But the fans in Flushing have been behind the unseeded underdog all tournament long, including yesterday when she lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to countrywoman Roberta Vinci in the fourth round.
* "It was really nice, the [crowd and fans], but it wasn't my day," Giorgi said.
* On Saturday, the 21-year old played her first match under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium in what was supposed to be an easy match for No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki. But Giorgi had other ideas, winning in three sets. Yesterday, on the much smaller Grandstand, she couldn't muster much, losing almost half of her service games while making 35 unforced errors to just five by the 10th-seeded Vinci.
* "It was two great weeks coming back from two months without playing, so I'm happy I came back to play," Giorgi said. "And I played [at a] really good level. Now I will still keep going and play more tournaments."
* Giorgi, who has been nursing a right shoulder injury, last played in June, when she lost in the third round at Wimbledon. The fourth-round appearance here matched her run at Wimbledon in 2012 for her best effort at a major.
* Vinci, who won the doubles title at the U.S. Open last year, earned her second-straight trip to the quarterfinals. She wasn't shocked the crowd was pro-Giorgi.
* "When I was on the court, I was just thinking about my game, not the public, not the crowd," Vinci said. "Camila is a younger player. Of course the public wants Camila to go to the quarterfinal or semifinal."
* There will be a roof in place on Arthur Ashe Stadium by 2016, which means there's three years until the end of days like yesterday, when rain and soggy conditions led to long delays, cancellations and a lot of disgruntled fans.
* The Giorgi-Vinci match was the only one completed before the 4-hour, 21-minute delay, which caused fans to scramble for cover in gift shops and under the tents at the food courts.
* The fourth-round match between Ana Ivanovic and Victoria Azarenka was postponed until 11 a.m. today, though there were vacant courts in the afternoon. The winner will have to play in the quarterfinals the following day.
* Several doubles matches — including the Williams' sisters — were cancelled, and Roger Federer, who had not played on a court other than Ashe since 2006, saw his match bumped to Louis Armstrong Stadium. It was the fourth time in eight days that rain caused a delay or cancellation.
* The USTA said yesterday's ticket holders could exchange their tickets for similar seats for the 2014 tournament.
* The U.S. Open and French Open are the only two Grand Slam sites that do not have roofs, but both have plans for them in the future.
* Nine "Wounded Warriors" were honored during Military Appreciation Day, enjoying the matches from a luxury suite in Ashe Stadium. Two are native New Yorkers: Sergeant Bryan Dilberian of Brooklyn and Sergeant Chris Bustamante of Freeport.
