Vet Edwards makes case for roster spot

Not only does Braylon Edwards believe he proved what he could do last night, he believes he still could prove a lot more.

Bidding to make the roster, the veteran wide receiver saw little action in the first half but delivered three catches and 49 yards, all in the third quarter, in the Jets' 37-13 preseason win over the Jaguars last night at MetLife Stadium.

"I still can make plays. I showed you tonight," Edwards said. "You can only progressively get better. I've only been at it now for two weeks. I didn't have OTAs. I didn't have minicamp. So just imagine what opening day could look like."

REELING IT IN: Wide receiver Braylon Edwards hauls in a pass in the third quarter of last night's preseason game against the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium.

That will come on Sept. 8 against the Buccaneers — and Darrelle Revis — but Edwards still must make the team and is battling with Ben Obamanu (no catches) and Lehigh's Ryan Spadola (three catches, 49 yards).

Edwards, 30, is the known quantity of the trio and the Jets receiver with the biggest name, outside of Santonio Holmes who is on the physically unable to perform list.

Nevertheless, the veteran is behind Stephen Hill, Clyde Gates and Jeremy Kerley on the depth chart, and is fighting for a job.

"I'm just here to play football," Edwards said. "However the coaches see fit, that's how we're going to roll with it. When they put me in, it's my job to do my job. I don't get caught up in all that. I just go out there when I'm told to."

The fact Mark Sanchez unexpectedly played into the third quarter was a break for Edwards, who has a good rapport with the quarterback.

On the Jets' first offensive play of the third, Edwards made a tumbling catch for 26 yards. He then picked up four more yards on a short completion and later got open along the sideline for 19 yards on a third-and-8, resulting in Khalil Bell's touchdown four plays later.

"I still have a lot to give," Edwards said, "and I think some of that was shown tonight."
