As expected, Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith did not play last night against the Jaguars.
Smith sprained his right ankle on Aug. 9 in the team's first preseason game against the Lions. Still, he practiced on the ankle two days later and practiced all week. It became clear in the middle of this past week the Jets were thinking of holding Smith out of last night's game as they danced around who was going to be the starting quarterback.
Ryan said he reached the decision Thursday, saying he did not want Smith to play in a live game.
"It's a lot different being in a red [practice no contact] jersey than being in a green and white one," Ryan said after the Jets' 37-13 preseason win over the Jaguars last night at MetLife Stadium. "The intensity your opponent plays with, your escapability obviously, we did not feel it was prudent to play him in tonight's game."
Smith said Ryan told him Friday and he accepted the decision. He was also told the quarterback competition with Mark Sanchez is still open. Smith might get the start Saturday against the Giants.
"Any chance I get to compete I'm going to try to take full advantage of it," Smith said. "I've got another week of practice coming up. I'm going to go out there with the right mentality and try to win the job."
Smith had a four-interception practice Wednesday that Ryan described as "brutal." Smith was asked what his reaction was to Ryan's comments.
"I had no reaction," Smith said. "It wasn't one of my best days, but that happens in this league. That's why we practice, to get better. I think I've been getting better every single day, even on days when I don't do so well."
