As many as 34 supporters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood were killed this morning by security forces that opened fire at a sit-in outside the Cairo military facility where toppled President Mohammed Morsi is being held, Reuters reported.
Murad Ali, of the brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, said that the shooting broke out while Islamists loyal to Morsi demanded he be reinstated during a protest outside the Republican Guard barracks.
The Egyptian military, for its part, said that a "terrorist group" tried to storm the Republican Guard facility where troops are holding the former president.
Another brotherhood official, Ahmed Aref, told Agence-France Presse that "16 people were killed and a hundred others injured, many of them in serious condition."
The incident follows a series of crackdowns on allies of the former president, who was deposed last week.
