KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Unofficially, the Mets are now leading the Grapefruit League in cortisone shots.
Shaun Marcum is the latest addition to the list, having received a shot for an "impingement" in his right shoulder on Tuesday in New York, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. The veteran right-hander has been scratched from his scheduled exhibition start today and told not to throw for at least a few days.
"Anytime there's some sort of intervention that occurs there is at least minor concern," Alderson said. "But this was largely precautionary."
Alderson said he doesn't anticipate a disabled list stint for Marcum, who missed time last season with the Brewers because of elbow soreness.
The Mets have reset their spring training rotation in Marcum's absence. Jeremy Hefner and Jon Niese will start the next two days, with manager Terry Collins still uncertain who will pitch Saturday. Aaron Laffey is scheduled to start on Sunday against the Tigers and likely would be the choice to move into the rotation if Marcum isn't ready to start the season.
Daniel Murphy and David Wright also have received cortisone shots this spring as they battle rib-cage injuries.

➤ Kirk Nieuwenhuis played in a minor league game as the designated hitter and went 1-for-5. It was Nieuwenhuis' first game action since sustaining a bone bruise in his left knee two weeks ago.
➤ Collins said he almost certainly will have two lefties in the bullpen on his Opening Day roster. Pedro Feliciano, Robert Carson and Scott Rice are the candidates to join Josh Edgin.
