New York City is now the "nation's most significant" heroin hub, according to city Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan.
Last year, authorities seized 750 pounds of smack — three times what is normally found in the city in a year.
Since 2010, 20 percent of heroin seized in the United States came via New York state, much of it trafficked through mills in The Bronx and upper Manhattan.
Brennan noted that the "skyrocketing" heroin trade in the city has led to a surge in overdose deaths, with the South Bronx and Staten Island leading the city.
In 2013, 420 New Yorkers died of heroin overdoses, making up 54 percent of all drug deaths in the city, according to Department of Health statistics. In The Bronx, 8.8 per 100,000 deaths were due to heroin.
Brennan's comments came at a City Council Public Safety Committee hearing Thursday, where she pleaded for more funding.
