A three-alarm fire on the 17th floor of a Manhattan high-rise was brought under control early Wednesday morning, after injuring four residents and filling several floors with smoke.

The fire started in an apartment on the 17th floor of 1295 5th Ave. and spread to the one above. Tenants on higher floors reported they were trapped in their apartments, but firefighters said they didn't have to remove anyone from their homes.

The blaze was brought under control at 1:15 a.m., after over 150 firefighters showed up to put out the flames.

Four residents sustained minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals, the FDNY said.

Several residents described the hectic scene, saying some tenants were panicking as they descended the building's smokey staircase.

"The smoke in the stairwell was really strong," said Matt DiAngelo, 24, who lives on the 27th floor. "I ran down to the 17th floor and saw the smoke billowing out."

"The firefighters were going up as we were going down. There were older people who had canes and walkers who were struggling. There were some people panicking," he added.

The smoke made it all the way up to apartments on the 35th floor, where resident Ana Torrenegra, 64, had to open her windows to get the smoke out.
