Ratings for ‘Two and a Half Men’ finale not so meh-morable

While viewership surged for the final episode of "Two and a Half Men" on Thursday, it was hardly a record for the long-running CBS sitcom.

The series finale — which had teased a potential return of its volatile former star, Charlie Sheen — averaged 13.5 million viewers from 9 to 10 p.m., up 45 percent from the previous week.

Sheen ultimately did not appear in the heavily self-referential hour, though the finale took more than a few shots at the bad-boy actor, including dropping a piano on a lookalike's head in the final seconds.

Series co-creator Chuck Lorre — who bore the brunt of Sheen's rage before the actor was fired from "Men" in 2011 — revealed in the episode's vanity card that Sheen was offered the role in the scene, but turned it down.

While 13 million viewers is no slouch in the current TV landscape, it hardly represents a high point for the 12-season comedy. A record 29 million people the 2011 season premiere, when Sheen's character was first killed off and Ashton Kutcher's character, Walden Schmidt, was introduced.

In fact, the bawdy sitcom has averaged upwards of 13 million viewers for nine of its 12 seasons; Thursday's finale audience was its largest since only April 2013.

By comparison, when another long-running CBS sitcom, "How I Met Your Mother," ended last season (finally answering the show's titular question), 12.9 million watched — fewer viewers than "Men," but a series record for "Mother."

'Odd Couple' opens big

CBS' new version of "The Odd Couple," starring Matthew Perry as Oscar and Thomas Lennon as Felix, launched to a robust 13.6 million viewers Thursday night.

"The Odd Couple" was helped, in large part, by its lead-in, "The Big Bang Theory" — which snared a whopping 17.5 million viewers at 8 p.m. — and the series finale of "Two and Half Men," which aired at 9.

Can the Matthew Perry-Thomas Lennon comedy hold on in week two without the draw of "Men"? Stay tuned.
