Adam Silver said he anticipates there will be more negotiations on the "smoothing proposal" rejected by the players union Friday that would keep the NBA salary cap from exploding in 2016.
"That's something we presented to the union," the NBA commissioner said Saturday. "Ultimately, it's up to them to decide what is in the interest of the Players Association.
"I haven't had a chance to engage with the union directly since they had that meeting last night. My sense is there will be additional discussions, but ultimately that is what our system is, under the current collective bargaining agreement."
If there is no agreement on a smoothing proposal between the two sides, the salary cap for the 2016-17 season will jump to somewhere around $90 million in July 2016 — when Kevin Durant will become a free agent and both the Knicks and Nets should have the cap space, assuming the cap spikes, to chase him.
During other portions of his annual All-Star weekend press conference, Silver reiterated what he told The Post in an extended Q&A earlier this week: Hesaid he wants to decrease the amount of back-to-backs and stretches of four games in five nights, and regarding the draft lottery and playoff format, he's willing to look at them, but doesn't see the need for great change in either.
Silver has said he is going to decrease the wear-and-tear on players bodies, and though there is no intention to shorten the 82-game schedule, cutting the preseason is a significant possibility.
"I have talked to a lot of basketball people about the preseason," Silver said. "And my sense is that while they still feel a training camp, and a fairly long training camp, is still critically important, especially because we have a lot of young players in this league and there isn't a lot of practice time once the season starts, I think they don't think preseason games are as valuable as they once were.
"So, I could see a scenario where while we'll continue to have a fairly lengthy preseason, we may be able to shorten it a little bit and that will help with some of our scheduling issues, and we may be able to reduce the number of preseason games."
