Power outage leaves State Department in the dark

Some of DC's top power players were left in the dark Monday after a blown transformer and a construction mishap killed power to the State Department and other government buildings.

A State Department spokeswoman said a power line that serves the agency was accidentally severed during morning construction.

Employees were asked to "shelter in place," and "non-emergency" personnel were asked to relocate or work from home.

The lights also flickered briefly at the White House Monday morning. The local power company cited the construction accident as the cause.

Meanwhile, a blown transformer near the downtown headquarters of the Office of Personnel Management shut down power to the Federal Reserve, the Labor Department, Park Police, and a bank insurance agency.

The Office of Personnel Management was evacuated.

"Numerous government agencies were affected by this," DC police spokesman Araz Alali told The Post, blaming a "transformer explosion."
