Mob turncoat gets 12 years after copping to 5 hits

A mob turncoat who admitted to helping kill five people — including a Brooklyn cop — landed just 12 years behind bars Tuesday.

And, thanks to time served, Colombo soldier Joseph "Joey Caves" Competiello will be out in fewer than six years.

Competiello, 43, pleaded guilty to the slayings as part of his government agreement to testify against his crime-family associates. That deal saved him from a potential life sentence.

Judge Brian Cogan, armed with a leniency plea from prosecutors, called Competiello's cooperation "extraordinary."

Key to the sentencing deal was the fact that Competiello testified against fellow mobster Dino "Little Dino" Saracino during Saracino's trial in the slaying of NYPD Officer Ralph Dols.

Dols was married to the ex-wife of reputed Colombo acting boss Joel "Joe Waverly" Cacace.

Competiello testified he was the lookout man and at the wheel of a "crash car" that was to be ready to ram any responding police cruiser after Saracino and another hit man gunned down Dols outside his Sheepshead Bay
home in August 1997.

The murder was a cold case for years until Competiello revealed Saracino's alleged role as part of a federal deal.

Despite Competiello's testimony, Saracino, Cacace and another mob boss, Thomas "Tommy Shots" Gioeli, were acquitted in the cop's murder.

But Competiello's testimony did help prosecutors put them away on other charges.
