Today in lower Manhattan, Jim Brennan will lead a press conference urging Govs. Cuomo and Chris Christie to sign a modest but badly needed reform of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
In this bid, the Democratic assemblyman from Brooklyn is supported by leaders from both parties and both states.
By itself, the legislation they are pushing will not fix the Port Authority's dysfunction.
This dysfunction is rooted in decades of bloat and mission creep that has seen the agency expand far from its original job of managing transportation infrastructure into more dubious areas such as real estate and "economic development."
The Post believes we will not see a truly reformed Port Authority until we have a much smaller Port Authority. Still, the two identical state bills would bring some needed transparency and accountability to a highly unaccountable agency.
It would, for example, require trustees to report any corruption or conflicts to the Port Authority's inspector general. Any proposed toll hike would be subject to an expanded period of public comment. And taxpayers would have much more access to what now takes place behind closed doors.
Christie has until Dec. 28 to sign the New Jersey bill, and Cuomo will have 10 days, once the state Legislature sends him a similar version.
We urge them to sign. The reforms do not go as far as we would like. But they still go much farther than anything we've yet seen.
