The battle between Hearst and Condé Nast got a little more interesting this week when Anna Wintour elevated her longtime Vogue creative designer to the corporate post of Condé Nast creative director.
While the move only formalizes what Raul Martinez has been doing for the past several years — since Vogue editor Wintour was given the added title of Condé artistic director in March 2013.
The change is likely to heat up the Condé-Hearst battle because Martinez's business and life partner, Alex Gonzalez, works crosstown as the consulting creative director at Elle, a Hearst mag and one of Vogue's main rivals.
Gonzalez earlier oversaw design overhauls at two other Hearst titles — Marie Claire and Town & Country.
"It's hilarious," said one source, referring to the rivalry.
Aside from being romantic partners, Gonzalez and Martinez had founded the hot ad design firm AR New York in 1996, with high-end clients such as Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino.
In recent years, its client list grew to include Jones New York and Banana Republic.
But with his April 1 promotion, Martinez is apparently taking a step back from AR New York — which was snapped up by ad behemoth Publicis two years ago.
Martinez, until Wednesday AR's chief creative officer — will now be a "consulting creative adviser" at AR New York.
Gonzalez remains AR's executive creative officer.
To be sure, a lot of AR's more recent work, such as with Revlon — where it did the "Love Is On" campaign — used Executive Creative Directors David Israel and Paul Eustace and others at the 55-person company.
The Gonzalez-Martinez connection is just the latest chapter in the interesting histories of the two publishing houses — where there has been a fair degree of jumping back and forth between Hearst and Condé.
Martinez actually jumped from Condé to Hearst during Kate Betts' tenure atop Harper's Bazaar — but returned to Condé and Vogue when Betts was given the old heave-ho.
In 2009, Martinez was named consulting design director of Vogue and Vogue.com.
Martinez has also worked on revamping many of the titles that Wintour has worked on in her new dual role.
"He's tremendously talented," said one source, "but he is Anna's guy."
The one criticism is that he's making too many of the Condé titles "Vogue-like."
"If you like Anna's version of Vogue, it's awesome, but if you don't want your magazine looking like a replica of Vogue, it's a problem," one insider sniffed. Neither Gonzalez nor Martinez could be reached for comment.
