Mets’ Terry Collins: No standouts in ‘unsettled’ bullpen

PORT ST. LUCIE — Terry Collins used one word to best describe his bullpen.

"Unsettled."

That seems accurate, with Josh Edgin having undergone Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, Jeurys Familia getting hit hard against the Marlins on the same day and struggling with his velocity at times, as well as other issues.

"Yeah, it's a little unsettling to think, 'Who are we going to get to fill those roles?' " Collins said of losing Edgin and hoping Vic Black makes it to Opening Day after playing catch Tuesday, recovering from shoulder weakness.

When asked if anyone has "stood out" in a positive way among the current crop of relievers, Collins was honest.

"Stood out? I would say no," Collins said.

Familia gave up three hard-hit balls in the eighth during a 6-4 win over the Marlins, and his velocity was stuck in the high-80s until it eventually increased to his typical mid-90s.

"We're lucky Carlos [Torres] is down there," Collins said.

Jacob deGrom looked good on Tuesday, tossing five scoreless innings with a fastball consistently clocking in at 95 mph.

He spent the outing working on an elevated fastball, with some success.
"There were a couple of fastballs with two strikes that got hit pretty hard to right field," deGrom said when asked to critique his performance. "Other than that, I was pretty happy with my outing."

DeGrom has walked just one batter in 11 innings this spring.

"He continues to trust his stuff and pound the strike zone," Collins said.

Juan Lagares went hitless on Tuesday, but did draw a walk. Still, Collins isn't ready to name him the leadoff hitter.

"We haven't really decided yet," Collins said. "I think he's done a great job. He's worked very hard on it. … We sure like the progress he's made."

Steven Matz pitched a perfect inning in a short outing. He'll get a longer stint coming in behind Noah Syndergaard on Saturday, according to Collins.

The Mets insist Matz is not a candidate for the bullpen, but Matz said he'd be ready if called upon.

"I haven't done it much, but if it came up I can definitely adjust to it," Matz said.

David Wright returned to camp after missing the last two days for family reasons in Norfolk, Va.

The Mets sent seven players to minor league camp: right-handers Matt Bowman, Tyler Pill, Hansel Robles, Cody Satterwhite and Gabriel Ynoa and infielders Wilfredo Tovar and Dilson Herrera.
