Personal tragedy sent Episcopal priest Diane Reiners on a downward spiral before she was caught swerving through the Holland Tunnel with an open bottle of vodka and prescription meds in her car, colleagues told The Post on Sunday.
Reiners, 53, of the famed Cathedral of St. John the Divine, lost her beloved husband several years ago to tongue cancer.
"It was a very painful death . . . He was a wonderful man,'' said Deenar Matthews, a fellow priest at St. John's in Morningside Heights.
Reiners, who lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, chronicled her husband's cancer battle in Marie Claire magazine in 2010, saying, "We laugh when people say that marriage is hard work. Cancer is hard work; our marriage is easy. But taking care of him can leave me without much time to take care of myself."
Reiners was ordained in 2012, after her husband died.
Before joining the priesthood, she worked for years tending bar at a Hell's Kitchen pub.
But back then, "drinking wasn't part of her MO," said her former boss at the bar, Caffe Cielo.
When a Port Authority cop pulled Reiners over Friday night, he found in her vehicle an open container of Absolut vodka, 31 anti-anxiety pills prescribed in someone else's name, and more than 200 pills of tramadol, a potent painkiller, authorities said.
Charges against her include reckless driving and criminal possession.
Reiners also has spent more than a decade toiling as a disaster-relief worker, including cooking for and counseling 9/11 responders at St. Paul's Chapel next to Ground Zero.
She could not be reached at her home Sunday, and attempts to contact her by phone went to voicemail — which still plays a recording of her late British husband.
