The families of US military members from around the country are taking precautions to protect themselves from an ISIS attack after the terror group released their home addresses this weekend.
The revelation of the information for 100 terrified military families — including one from upstate New York — has prompted warnings from top brass for them to be wary.
"Vigilance and force-protection considerations remain a priority for commanders and their personnel," Marine Corps Lt. Col. John Caldwell said in a statement Sunday.
The threat came after a group calling itself the "Islamic State Hacking Division" claimed to have accessed records for US military personnel.
"With the huge amount of data we have from various different servers and databases, we have decided to leak 100 addresses so that our brothers residing in America can deal with you," the group wrote in an online posting to its followers.
"Now we have made it easy for you by giving you addresses. All you need to do is take the final step, so what are you waiting for?"
The hit list includes members of the four major military branches and lists full names, ranks and addresses.
None of the military personnel are from New York City, but one is a Navy lieutenant originally from upstate Columbia County.
Though the list's creators claim it is the work of "hackers," most of the names appeared to have been taken from public records and searchable news articles about US military involvement in Iraq and Syria.
The Post found that some addresses were incorrect. In three instances, the addresses were only post-office boxes.
NATO commander Philip Breedlove called the list a publicity stunt aimed at diverting attention from ISIS's own military setbacks.
"What we have seen across the last several months is that every time they take a defeat on the battlefield . . . they come out with kind of some big splash like this," he said at a conference in
Brussels. "This caliphate, I think, is under great pressure and so they try to divert attention from what is happening on the battlefield."
