Working Families Party backs campaign to draft Warren in presidential race

In a sign of discontent from the left, The Working Families Party voted Sunday to back a campaign to draft liberal Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president next year and challenge fellow Democrat and likely White House candidate Hillary Clinton in a primary.

Warren is a darling of the left-progressive wing of the Democratic Party, much like Mayor De Blasio is on the municipal level.

"She's taken the fight directly to Wall St. and to the big banks that increasingly have a vice grip on our economy and our democracy," said WFP state director Bill Lipton.

Lipton credited Warren with helping create a federal consumer financial protection Bureau.

"Convincing Senator Warren to jump into the race for president would be a game-changing moment for the progressive movement and for our country. It would be our single best shot at making sure working families' issues are front and center in the national political debate," Lipton said.

Warren insists she's not running for president.

But the move by the WFP — financed by the city's biggest unions and whose leaders are allies of de Blasio — is a slap in the face to Clinton. The WFP backed the former New York senator's two runs for statewide office.

Last year, the WFP threatened to deny Democratic Gov. Cuomo its ballot line when he sought re-election last year. The party eventually supported him.
