The Rising Stars Challenge may have had a new format this year, but the game didn't look much different.
Led by 22 points, six rebounds and four assists from MVP Andrew Wiggins, Team World wound up pulling out a 121-112 victory over Team USA at Barclays Center Friday night, in the first year that the game featuring first and second year NBA players was played with a U.S. against the World format.
Competing against Team USA is something Wiggins potentially could do in the future as a member of the Canadian national team, something he said he's looking forward to.
"I would love to," Wiggins said with a smile. "That's a game I dream of when I play in the Olympics."
Despite the new look of the rosters, the game was the same — a series of high-flying dunks with some 3-pointers and not much defense mixed in.
Unlike last year, however, when Dion Waiters and Tim Hardaway, Jr. turned the game into a de facto 1-on-1 competition, this year's contest was a more well-rounded affair, with Victor Oladipo and Zach LaVine — both of whom will be competing in the Slam Dunk
Contest here Saturday night — leading Team USA with 22 points apiece.
The Nets were well represented, as well, with Mason Plumlee going for 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, a steal and two blocks for Team USA and Bojan Bogdanovic finishing with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists for Team World.
"It's fun," said Plumlee, who will be back in Brooklyn to compete in the Slam Dunk Contest Saturday night. "It's a little hard to get going because it is so sloppy and there are so many fast breaks. You may not get back on defense or get up and down on offense, but you just take the opportunities as they come."
While Plumlee's weekend is continuing, Bogdanovic's participation came to an end. Though he said it wasn't something he expected to happen, he's glad that it did.
"I didn't expect it, but I really enjoy this week," Bogdanovic said. "I hope that next season I'll be part of it again as part of the world team."
