There soon could be two new sheriffs for this one-horse Hamptons town.
Westhampton Beach is considering hiring a police commissioner who, in addition to the newly named police chief, would oversee a force of just 10 officers in the 2.9-square-mile village.
The duo would serve as a replacement for Ray Dean, the former chief who retired in June 2014 with a whopping payout of $403,714 for 513 days of unused sick, vacation and personal time, The Post reported in August.
Dean's 2013 pay was $226,236 more than NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton earns.
Trevor Gonce, who had been a lieutenant under Dean, was named chief in December 2014 at a salary of $148,491.
A police commissioner would earn up to 5 percent more than the chief, if the village board votes this week to approve the position, according to a pending resolution.
Westhampton Beach would reportedly become the only village in Suffolk County to have a police commissioner.
Mayor Maria Moore tried to spin the hiring as a cost-saving measure issuing a report that said that the combined salaries of a commissioner and chief would be less than the previous combined salaries of Dean and Gonce.
But the savings could add up to just $1,600 a year.
Moore, in her report, said a commissioner would bring experience "from an accredited department" and allow officers "to achieve professional growth that has not yet been available to them."
But one former village officer said it seemed like the two people would be doing the same job.
"It's a waste of money and time," said Jim Kametler, former deputy mayor of the village. "They either have confidence in the [police chief] they hired or they don't."
The resort town of 1,700 permanent residents has almost no serious crime, with only 46 such incidents reported in 2013.
